I figured I'd host this week's contest since I've been spending so much time on this site and have learned from all of you. In the spirit of recent news regarding "buried tresure" found under a tree, for this week's contest...I ask what was your "buried treasure" or best find? Please post your response to this thread and I will pick a respondant at random. The lucky winner will receive a 1963 Franklin Half in VF-XF. EX: my best find, while searching bank rolls of half dollars...an 1892 columbian expedition box coin! The contest will end next Wednesdat at 12:00PM EST
My best and most exciting find so far, was while I was mowing a yard, I spotted this coin on the ground. Then I put it in my pocket till I was done and went inside. When I rinsed the dirt off, it was a 1916 Dime. Unfortunalty it is not a 1916 D, but is was still a fun find! SM
My best find is a little different. I was up in British Columbia Cananda doing some camping in a remote area. Up on the top of a mountain range in the late 1800's early 1900's the locals developed a horse race track. Horses were brought from many countries and raced in this meadow in the top of the mountains. There were also some buildings including a hotel that was developed. When I was there, there was nothing left but a few footings. I had a cheap metal detector with me and found a coin/medal that had been stamped with the letter "U" and a number. In visiting with the locals, I was told that the coin would have been attached to a room key for the hotel, the "U" being the upper floor and the number would be the room number. Interestingly enough, we also found an old ball and cap pistol. This was 20+ years ago, and though the coin likely has no monetary value, the best find was the memory made.
I guess my best find has more sentimental value than monetary. After my grandmother passed away and we were going through all of her stuff, we came across an envelope with a few things stuffed in it that apparently meant something to her. One of those things was a 1921 Morgan silver dollar. I asked my dad and my uncle if I could have it and they consented. My grandmother, widowed because of the war, came to America from Germany in 1952 with her three boys, my dad being the oldest at 17. She went to school and earned a teaching degree. Anyway, I have always wondered what memories she had associated with this coin and how she came to have it. I guess I won't know until I see her again.
Our First Beach Find... I am new to coin collecting and metal detecting mainly taking them up as hobbies to spend more time with the kids. Unfortunately, we have not found any pre-1964 coins yet, but one of our first finds was this penny on the beach. After digging a massive hole and sifting through the sand we found this (at the time) undistinquishable coin. We didn't know what it was, until we got home and cleaned it. Lo and behold, it was a 1995 Penny, amazing what salt and sand can do to a coin. So I am submitting this as our greatest find, it may not be the prettiest coin, or worth any realy monetary value, but it is great to keep around as a conversation peace. I'll tell the kids of the contest... -Jay
My best find was definitely my wife. No coin in existence shines like her, no gold ducat is purer than her gold heart, nothing minted has ever been so beautiful from head to tail. All the coins ever minted are just a handful of Chuck E. Cheese tokens compared to her.
My best random find so far was a silver dime in a change for coffee... Thanks for the contest, Notoco
My first treasure Summer 1959 (!) me a 12 years old boy, snorkel dived in an impressive depth of about 2-3 feet at Nahariya beach (north of Haifa & Akko, Israel), suddenly I saw a shinning gold coin under a small rock - That's how my coin collection started. The coin is (to the best of my knowledge) an Egyptian 'Zeri Mahbub' km#86 AH 1143/5 = 1736
My best finds have been in my wifes coin jar, about 5 prfs. i dime,i nickle, and 3 quarters.in my own change in the last 5 yrs. or so I have found a clashed die quarter, i sil. ross. and a 36 prf. wheat, but it has finger prints. The 1892 columbia, now thats a real find, I've only seen them in shops.
I got a cheap metal detector in 1974 and I took it to work at show a co-worker. ( I am a tree climber) I scanned the bottom of the tree he was in and found a 1832 large cent, kind of crusty, but I still have it.
1907 Barber At 13 years old, I bought a Whites Medal detector with some money received for my Bar Mitzvah. One day at the beach I found a 1907 Barber Dime. It was in pretty rotten condition, but it was very exciting. I have very fond memories of that day. Since then, I really haven't used that metal detector much. The last time I used it was to clear nails out of a friends back yard so his daughter would not get hurt. Those nails were very important finds as well. Pilot-I am interested in bringing my old metal detector to Israel this summer. My wifes family is from Northern Israel as well. Are they legal to use in Israel. Will I have problems bringing it in? Should I be nervouse of Syrian or Lebanese Mines near the border.
I found a 1927D Wheat penny in VF condition in change. Thought it was a 47 until I looked closer at it.
my best find would have to be a whole roll of silver kennedies from the bank when i thought it was just regular, i think about 8 64s
The capped die strike nickel I found in 86 ranks up there, but I would have to say the best find yet came about an hour after I had told a co-worker that I collect coins and how to tell the difference between the pre-post 1964 coins by listening to the sound they make. No joke, I found a silver roosevelt about an hour later in my change at a sub shop......wierd. Gusmyster
One of my numismatic memories was being given a 1979 1 Cent coin from South Africa (the Nicholaas Diederichs memorial commemorative) by one of my 2 sisters who had it given to her in change around 16 or 17 years ago.We still had 1c. & 2c. coins over here in New Zealand.I still have this coin,as South Africa is a British Commonwealth country,& that is what I specialise in collecting.
good luck to you all..my best coin fine was this site that gives me all the info about any coin i have..tar..To..JBK...i have a quick and ezy accses to any cion i like..
My best find...1945 Walker under the hedge shortly after we bought our old house the last time I was stationed here. Good luck y'all.
Ny best finds of US coins (I live in England but collect US) was a 1795 Liberty Cap (plain edge) cent (EF) and an 1858 Flying Eagle cent (also EF) together with some Roman and English coins from a junk shop in Lincolnshire. The 2 US coins cost in total less then $5 for both. From the ground with my metal detector I have found coins and other items from all periods from Roman onwards. Many thanks for a good competition - this is the first one that I have entered. Regards, PAB.
