Hw about the ones that say PROOF-LIKE.. STAY AWAY FROM THEM ?? The bay is full of those type of words like Mirror like, Proof finish, these are'nt the ones your talking about right?
The term 'Proof Like', while used extensively by our loving TPGs, is nothing more than a pretty Business Strike. There is nothing 'Proof' about them.
I would look at pcgs CoinFacts survival estimates. Most proofs of that period had at least a 50% survival rate as collectors often cared then and bought them
The PLs and DMPLs are fascinating to me and I find them absolutely beautiful, but they are not proofs. I have 10 of them with 2 more on the way. Words of caution: only buy graded ones if you are buying online and with clear pics. Stick with 64 and above. The mirrorlike finishes will greatly exaggerate any small nick, so be ultra picky and patient.
Very hard to come by, Penna_Boy is right there are bunches of Proof Like. Stay away most have been cleaned, polished, and/or toned. Be safe not sorry
Coin World explains proof and proof-like this way: https://coinweek.com/us-coins/morgan-dollars-for-beginners-proof-vs-prooflike/
Easiest way to keep from getting burned is to deal only with slabbed PLs and DMPLs. I don’t trust any raw coin where the seller uses those designations.
Morgan proofs have a very high survival rate. Although the mintages are low, there are many beautiful examples out there. They are expensive, but not as bad as some Morgan key dates.
