Received this coin today from Roma, it was in a group lot with few levantine provincial coins. I spent few hours but couldn't identify it. Any ideas? 15.9x14 mm, 3.86g, 12h.
Not Septimius Severus. I think my old eyes see ...CEOYH ANTO... Antoninus is not part of SS's name. ...Severus Antoninus...is what I think it says, in part. That should give you a lead in tracking down the coin. Perhaps Caracalla.
Thank you, @PeteB but I still think it might be Septimius. It could rather be AYTO rather than ANTO, look at this Paneas coin for example:
Are you looking for a reverse that seems to have a wreath or circular object between crossed cornucopias?
I have actually looked at all small provincial coins with crossed cornucopia of second half of II and first half of III century in RPC and acsearch. I guess I am missing something, or doing the search wrongly...
Few more hours of research and mystery solved. Indeed, Septimius Severus, and I was able to read on the reverse. Unfortunately not covered by RPC yet (hopefully next year), but other references are: DeSaulcy Damascus, Septimius Severus *8 and Mionnet Volume 5 p.289 n.45. I was not able to find pictures of other specimens in public collections or auction records, seems to be very rare.
I too have a crossed cornucopiae type I was unable to fully attribute. Below is a photo and my best guess: Caracalla Æ 19 (218-222 A.D.) Thrace, Philippopolis M AV KAI ANTΩ[NEINOC], draped bust right / ΦIΛIΠΠOΠ[OΛITΩN], two crossed cornucopiae. Unattributed! (2.94 grams / 19 x 16 mm) Attribution Note: I could not find this coin online. There is an issue of Philippopolis with crossed cornucopiae, but for Septimius Severus: Septimius Severus, AE18 of Philippopolis, Thrace. AVK Λ CEYHΡOC, laureate head right / ΦIΛIΠΠOΠOΛEITΩN, Two crossed cornucopiae, filled with fruit. Varbanov 1267. (Wildwinds)
