1883 Liberty Nickel

    Without being able to enlarge the photos, my first thought was a cleaned (dipped) coin, due to what appears to be a pitted surface on the obverse. Read the following and re-post the pics.

    I like the pictures and the coin. Even if it wouldn't get a "clean" grade, I would like to have one if the price was right.

    I had to get this. I can't remember what I paid but it's Graded by ANACS , guess grade ?lol

    Ditto to Jim Dale's low MS simply because it does appear to have been cleaned. Nice coin though and it's a keeper.

    If cleaned, it wouldn't grade though.

    The word "Liberty" looks really strange in the crown. I looked at one of my coins and it is clear as day, especially with the hair detail shown in the pictures. Possible counterfeit? Also it looks as if it may have been struck-thru a rectangular piece of debris at star 4 to the forehead. I am thinking maybe AU55.

    I agree with @Steve Shupe . The letters LIBERTY on the headband do look funny. I don't know enough to say if it's counterfeit or not. Someone could've been playing around with it (tooling?). I'm posting a photo of another coin for comparison:
