I normally hang around in the World coins section, but I have been brought 3 older coins for assessment in the market. I know a bit but not enough! This is the first. Clearly Greek, but please can someone tell me more? Also, does it seem right? Weighs about 14.6g and measures about 30mm across.
I'm not an expert but that's a Thasos Tetradrachm with Dionysos / Herakles. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/he...drachm_dionysos__herakles/804203/Default.aspx But Herakles looks a little short. It seems there were a lot of imitations of these, so whether it's right or not is another question: http://rg.ancients.info/thracetets/part1.html
I don't know if this is relevant - it was in a packet marked "Danubian Celts c 220BC AR Stater". I assumed this was just a mis-packeting, but did the Celts produce barbarous copies of these coins?
Yes. The celts are well known for making barbarous copies. This was exactly my first impression. See if you can find yours here: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/celtic/danube/t.html
