I don’t know if it’s a coincidence, but I just found a guy who is selling MS64 slab Morgans at a really great price. He’s gonna look through them for something with eye appeal tomorrow. I may be following your lead on this, though I suspect the coin I get will have less eye appeal. One thing I did realize is that I sold the Barber dime too quickly. I should’ve held out for more money. I took the quick cash but now I’m having trouble finding something else. In hindsight I’ve been better off holding out for more money. The other thing I realize this is through this exercise I am getting pretty good at appraising things at first sight in that price range. I’m pretty sure I will know a deal when I see it without having to look anything up at this point. This has been good for me. I feel like I’m playing catch up to you right now. It will be interesting as the budget gets bigger. Well, I hope you lose your ass selling that coin.
Ddddd, consider this retaliation! Instead of a Morgan, just bought this QUARTER for $138.45 delivered. It’s AU55. The downside is that it’s in an ICG slab, but a smart shopper will buy this obviously eye appealing coin for its true value. This one has a slight cameo aspect to the toning and it will be very hard (emotionally) to sell this coin...I won’t go for a quick flip. And yes, I am loaning myself around $20 to get it per the rules. One thing I’m wondering is whether I can improve some of the scratches on the slab or buff it out or something without damaging it...might not be worth the risk. I’m also wondering if these photos are capturing all of the beauty of this coin. I think I can tease more beauty out of this coin with the right lighting. It’s getting more interesting. Nice! @stevereecy Here is a thread where it is shown how to help remove scratches on a slab: https://www.ngccoin.com/boards/topi...e-gouges-scuffs-amp-scratches-from-ngc-slabs/
The leaderboard now looks like this: 1. Ddddd: $83 coin plus $50.71 Cash =$133.71 2. Steve: $138.45 coin minus $20.45 loan = $118 3. Rob9874: $118 cash New entrants can participate with a budget of $118
@Rob9874 Get going like you’re leaving? Or get going like get off your butt and buy a coin and play? Candidly, I’m having fun doing this and I have learned a lot about finding nice coins at good prices by doing this. I also find them faster now. Likewise I’ve learned more about getting top dollar. It’s a constructive exercise. I too thought more people would join in and I think that they ultimately may join in to “play” as the coin quality continues to improve. Getting cool coins in the mail is pretty great too. I feel confident that Ddddd and I are pretty committed to doing this for a while. I’m grateful that he’s taking this serious, I wanted challenging competition and I got it! FWIW, If you’re struggling to find something to buy, I will be happy to PM you some tips and tricks to finding good deals on great coins. I’m more concerned with playing than winning.
Well now I can’t pass DDDDD if my latest coin purchase is circumnavigating the globe complements of the USPS. Usually when something is “out for delivery” it eventually gets to me. Luckily for me, DDDDD set his price way too high.
This looks like a lot of fun. I wish I had the time to play. I do have some coins to sell though, and loathe eBay. Can you post here some ideas for other online forums where you buy or sell your coins? Facebook groups, or others? Thanks.
@stevereecy update on the Morgan; sold and delivered....105 minus shipping/fees left 97.35 on an 83 purchase....for a gain of 14.35 And I picked up my next entry....more info later
Ddddd is walking away from the competition. The leaderboard now looks like this: 1. Ddddd: Cash =$148.06 2. Steve: $138.45 coin minus $20.45 loan = $118 3. Rob9874: $118 cash New entrants can participate with a budget of $118
This will be my next entry. Interesting history as it sold at HA for $352.50 in 2017 but I managed to win it at auction for $72.99!
That coin is amazing. What’s interesting is it is an honest representation of Queen Victoria. That’s a coin I could put in my collection easily.
Back from the dead. My coin finally sold. I lowered the price to where I think I lost money. I’m probably back to $100 after shipping and fees. I have to add up all the damage. I think I learned a lesson about bothering with offbrand slabs. The new buyer is likely gonna crack it out and make a fortune on the coin. But it wasn’t feasible for me to do that in this competition. I guess now I’m in shopping mode again, but I might wait till right before Christmas when the bargains are evident. By the way, is currency purchasing allowable in this competition?
I'm fine with currency being included. My last entry sold a while back but I forgot to update the thread. I decided to lower the price to get a quicker sale as opposed to sitting on it for a long time. I made $41 on it (after deducting all fees), so still solid for me. I have bought and sold a few more items for slight gains since that time but won't include them here. I'll pick something new to include.
