Beautiful Austrian Coins. They almost look like they are framed artwork. Of course, the history of Austria is tied up with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which controlled Serbia (hence somewhere to host their ships). Didn't work too well, since the heir to the throne was murdered in Sarajevo and kicked off WWI and ended their empire (and access to the sea).
Thanks! I love the history that coins can bring to mind. Sometimes overtly and sometimes by digging into the background.
This is one of the rare Hard Times Tokens. The Whig Party pieces often included ships in their medal and token designs because ships played an important role in 19th century commerce. Here is a much more common pro-Whig token. The obverse shows the good ship Daniel Webster or "Constitution." The reverse shows the wrecked ship, Martin Van Buren or "Experiment."
