    Ottoman, all right, but I don't read Turkish. The emblem near the top of the coin in the right hand photo is the tughra, which is the "signature" of the reigning Sultan.

    turkish document #1 rightside up.jpg Did a little searching...it looks like the tughra of Abdul al-Ḥamid II, who reigned from 1876 to 1909. I am not an expert on Ottoman coins. However...I have a photo of the Turkish document from 1898 when the island of Crete was freed from Ottoman rule. The independence documents were signed by all parties at my family's home in Crete and the home served as independent Crete's first capital. I'll upload the photo. The tughra is a perfect match to the one on your coin. So we know the time frame.

    There is a date below the tughra with an X scratched across it. Not clear but looks like 1324 (= 1906/7).
