Cannot really say I'm overwhelmed by those designs. :) Yes, I have those coins too, but primarily because you can get them at face. So it is not a question of spending much on the pieces. The Michiel de Ruyter coin is interesting because of the way the designer "spreads" the motto onze parel hun schrik ("our pearl - their fright") across both sides. But the portraits, well ...

The German coin - that one looks as if the eagle was frightened by the flood of stars on the other side, hehe. The inscription on the edge, Europäische Union - in Vielfalt geeint, is the motto of the European Union, "United in Diversity". The idea of highlighting the six founding members on the map is nice, but that side a whole is a little too starry.

LOL cost me a little over face but I know what you mean about the German one, the Dutch on the other hand I find rather nice as I am a fan of naval history and this man played a rather large role in that LOL

Oh yes, I have been to Vlissingen many times, and it's hard not to learn about him while one is there. :) The city even issued its own Michiel de Ruyter pieces in 2007 - a Half Ruyter (brass), a 1 Ruyter (bi-met, golden ring), and I think three 2 Ruyter "coins" (bi-met, silverish ring). You could purchase and, at least theoretically, then spend them in town. Those actually have nice designs IMO but of course are not really coins ...

Nice designs! Hey, you have euro circulation coins that I do not have yet. Must work on that. :D It is a pity that they went from having different designs for all denominations to just three for eight denominations. Ah well, better than just one ...

They changed the reverse for all the coins at some point, and at least Belgium has changed all the obverses as well. Not counting the microstates, all the original members of euroland have had at least one makeover for all of their coins.

As far as the designs of the common sides are concerned, yes, the maps on the "golden" coins (10, 20, 50 cent) and the bimetallic pieces (€1, €2) were modified mostly in 2007. But the "copper" pieces (1, 2, 5 cent) were not changed.

The Belgian obverse designs (all of which show King Albert) were slightly modified in 2008, e.g. the country code BE was added. Finland did the same thing - add the FI - in 2007. In both cases there were some other minor changes too. Now whether a euro collector "needs" to have all those varieties, well, I don't know. People here in Euroland may want them, but collectors elsewhere may not be that interested in the third or fourth variation of Albert's portrait ...

Imo the Irish chap who designed their representation in the dominant european currency must have been hungover. There are more things in the republic than the celtic culture -unfortunately in modern history the most predominant thing has been the ra :(
Nevertheless, a coin with a big pint of guiness on it would look great if they worked out a way of cheaply enamelling it black and cream :D

Hmmm... They ARE circulation coins right now, but the were not as De Orc posted his message (I know you know about this ;) ).

As a new country gets into the euro (as Slovakia on January, 1st) the banks exchange the old coins into eurosets (little bags with pocket change). So some dealers took coins from them to get the set and sell it to collectors with very few patience.

I am more patient than that and my set is on his way home (and so the Slovakian euroset).

I heard that some Slovakian coins went out from the country and some people began to use it before they were allowed to do it. So they were paying in fact with worthless "coins". There has been some polemic about this, so next countries should be more careful.

Guess there won't be any new euro countries for a while. ;) In general I do not think there is a problem with using such coins that are not quite legal tender yet. After all, "the locals" get those starter kits/bags at face value, and the conversion rate is fixed. So if I pick some Slovakian euro coins up in Bratislava in December and spend them in Vienna (about 60 km away) the next day ... not a big deal.

However, the problem in Slovakia was that these starter kits were the only ones. Unlike other countries that founded or joined the euro area, they did not have bigger kits for stores. So whoever wanted to get the coins in advance - businesses, citizens planning to use it, and collectors - had to get one or more of those. Solution: More kits next time. :)

Congratulations. I got that one yesterday too. Those Italian designs are a big contrast compared with, for example, German ones.

Now we will be really busy with the new 2€ UME 10th aniversary conmemorative circulation coins ;)
