I reserve further comment until I can view a clear closeup of the date.

Welcome to CT @David travers. Like others, I will wait for better photos, Full Image, of the date area, but it appears you may have something worth further investigation.

Not worth those extra $, because the damage is irreversible. Worth getting authenticated, sure, but professional conservation would be a waste of money, I think.

I can't tell from the photos but it has s good shot at being the 8/7 overdate. I doubt it would straight grade, more like a details due to the poor condition. I'd check it out closer but I wouldn't have it graded. I would keep it though.

Hey, relax. This ain’t the guy’s job, or anything like that. If he wants more opinions and help, maybe he’ll post better images. Maybe he won’t. Until then, it remains a bit of an enigma, I guess. I do share your curiosity, however.

Sometimes new members stick around, and sometimes they post and vanish. Did that myself. I joined in 2007, posted a few times, then wandered off for nine years, only rediscovering this site and becoming active in 2016.

(I’ve since made up for lost time with my post count.) ;)

Yeah, well, I lost sight of the fact he was a new member, so you’re right. But he was last seen yesterday morning over 36 hours ago and I think he’s just being rude...Spark

if authentication is the goal, because condition will likely exclude it from straight grading, Might as well send it to ANACS and save some money on the grading jsut to verify it is genuine.

I mean I don't see it as "cheap", really must be $600 at a lowest straight grade.
so a details, might knock it down some but.... how much really? I'm no grader of buffalo nickels but I'd think it could be a VG-F details coin so I dont' think it's a G4 or something that low as a details coin..

Got to be worth the grading fees and remove doubt about it being legit to a buyer, even if it gets detailed.

I can see the 8/7. Wow! Looks like there are people that are just putting all their coins in circulation from covid.

Do yourself a favor and check it with a magnet first before sending it in.

If it attracts strongly, don't bother.

Not a conclusive test, but a valid one.

Nice to get it in change.
It could be an 8 over 7. Need clear photos.
A regular 1918-D even in that condition has value.
But the 8 over 7 is rare and very valuable. GL
Yes you have to test if it is genuine.
Weigh it. Nickels weigh 5.0 grams. It should be close to that.

Please try to put a glass magnifier in front of the camera lens. It could be damage due to wear and no need to spend a lot of money on getting it graded if it is such.
