Saw the story on CNN. Awesome find!!!! More than 100k worth (not face value) of old paper money. Very, very cool. The guys were "handling" the money for the cameras.

I get my best results when I dig a vertical tunnel under a bank and then dig straight up. :)

Just as long as you perfect the technique before trying to leaving prison. Just keep repeating "Horizontal, then up. Horizontal, then up", and I think you'll do fine :p

Isn't some of the Gold paper money illegal to own?

He found something neat and I bet he isn't even a collector....

It was all recalled and the "payable in gold" provision voided early in the 1930s, but I don't believe it was illegal to own them, especially in bona fide collections.

Since somewhere around 1970, when Nixon took the U.S. off the gold standard, allowed the price of gold to float, and allowed Americans to own gold bullion, the notes would certainly be legal to own, just not redeemable in gold.

I dont imagine the money was in the gutters, more likely it was inside the barn. Its doubtfull the tin cans could have survived exposed to the elements in gutters for too long. These guys are obvously idiots. I cant imagine what was going through their heads. If they would have kept quiet they may have gotten away with it. . Im sure they will get what they deserve. Now .....im off to clean my gutters...

These day most people don't get what they deserve...most people are too lasy to care what they get.

Back to coins....I wonder how they found it and how they got it out of the house?

    It does happen

About a month ago a friend of mine called me an asked, "You're a coin collector, aren't you" Responding with a positive they told me they were doing some work on their house that they had owned for 15 years and the previous owner had died. As they pulled a shelf out of a wall that had been built in the garage, they found a hand made box full of coins. They wanted to know if I would look at it for them.

They brought it over with the new redbook - a book I don't use much since I collect Australian coins.

All the coins in the box just under 250 of them were half and silver dollars
1878 -1960 After cataloging the coins and keeping the best 25 for my friends grandchildren and the next best 5 for myself. We sold the remaining coins off some for value some for bullion (depending on condition of the coins).

And my friend took home close to $2000.00 Not bad for doing a little remodeling in your garage.

Moral of the story. - People do find money in their homes so don't be afraid of those weekend chores, they just might pay off. :D

Hey I got some beautiful silver dollars just for having the privledge of sorting and grading the coins- which was fun for me to do any way and I would have done it for free. Plus the bonus- I got a great education on US half and silver dollars.
