okay guys this is where you spit out why you dislike the hobby ill go first i just bought airtites worth $1000 to keep coins which are worth less than $100 each. need less to say i was very unhappy when i used up all my airtites and now i will have to uy some more this was my third larger order this year and i have spent over $3k this year alone on supplies. what a expensive hobby. on a good note my rupee collection for modern india is now complete and i will finsih some others too got a lot of coins recently as a gift from the original great coin collector on indian coins
I hate it when the TPGs change their holders so the new ones don't match the older ones. I also hate it when one TPG won't cross a perfectly good coin into their holder so once again my collection ends up in mismatched holders. I'm finished venting. I really like the hobby. Very best regards, collect89
And what did you spend per coin? I think a $1 airtite is a good investment for even a $10 coin. My only dislike is - I can't afford everything I want.
I love the hobby, I just dislike how some people approach it. As long as it doesn't effect me I am fine. I also don't like spending money on anything but coins. A few books and some protective stuff, the minimum. Save for these few things, any money spent on something other than coins is a lost coin. This is why I don't buy many books save a few catalogs pertinent to my collection (some Krause, a few specialty catalogs for notgeld and unusual coins and medals), I don't use or spend money for TPGs, I don't pay club dues, etc...In the end, the thing I hate the most is anything that I feel artificially hikes the price of coins...
I hate those dumb#$$ counterfeiters that are ruining the hobby. And I hate not having money to spend on coins. But this is one of my top four favorite hobbies.
At .74 a piece or less, that is a h*ll of a lot of air tites, spock. You must live in a relative bunker with all of your space taken up with coins! Hate is a strong word for a hobby that I really enjoy, but I'll say that it bothers me that I never have enough $ for what I'd like to buy.
I hate when things don't make sence. Fer example I have a 1832 Half cent that the mint minted 51,000. Mine is in Au or better Cond. and its worth 200 on a good day and the 1909 S VDB (mint 484,00) is worth 700+ in good.
I tend to agree. I enjoy the hunt, the negotiating, the unpredictability, and if people would just deal honestly and without the attitude, everything would be just about perfect. More recently, I've found I enjoy looking at the coins as much as owning them. If you get over the psychological need to own everything you like, you can save a lot of money. I've also broken out of the mental prison that many "experts" create with advice such as "buy the best you can afford." What is best for dealers is frequently not what is best for you. Think for yourself. Decide what you really like and collect it regardless of what anybody else thinks. The hobby has far more variety than many people think.
First off, I wish I had the problem of having to spend that much on supllies. I think the biggest thing I disslike is the fakes and altered coins. I also hated it when I sold on ebay and I would run an honest listing and get a average or below average price for my coins when the shysters were selling complete junk if not fakes for above average money. :desk:
I dislike dishonest dealers and shameless self-slabbers. It makes me sad that people who don't know any better clean coins before selling them. Other than that, I love the hobby. Anyone who doesn't, PM me, and I'll give you an address to which you can send those reviled metal discs, therefore freeing yourself of the coin-collecting demon forever.
Just for the heck of it, go on ebay and do a search on "ms70 coins." This loser who slabs coins in his musty basement thinks everything shiny is ms70. SGS is a prime example of what sucks in numismatics:headbang:. If I can see the flaws in a blurry, out of focus picture on a 19" monitor, this fool must have lost his glasses. Am I the only one who realizes how rare even an ms65 business strike is? Oh yeah, I love collecting coins!!!:smile
But if you could afford it, you probably wouldn't want it and you would want whatever is out of your reach. At least that's how I feel.
man, I was going to PM you and send you my coins...but allas, I didnt know better and cleaned some of them, so I guess you wont be wanting them...like this cleaned and now apparently worthless coin:
The point he is making is that there is a difference between cleaning - and - harsh/improper cleaning. In other words - not all cleaning is bad. An important distinction for proper cleaning can sometimes even make the coin worth more !
This is proof of the power that "demand" has in the "supply/demand" establishment of value. I imagine if half cents sets became as highly collected as Lincoln cents someday, the majority of the half cents would become virtually unattainable. Anyways, I do agree that deceptive counterfeits are what I hate about this hobby.
That coin is worth no less because of cleaning. In fact, judging from the offers people have made for it, the coin would sell for well above what I bought it for not long ago when it was filthy. The only thing that should ever lower a coins value when it comes to cleaning is when it is improper...but I shouldnt start this whole thing up again here....you have your right to your point of view.
Dru I think the point you fail to recognize is that just about everybody agrees with you anyway - regarding cleaning. It's kind of like penny and cent. Yes, penny is not the proper term - cent is. But a whole lot of people use the term penny anyway. Same thing with cleaning - when somebody says cleaning - they really mean harsh/improper cleaning. But they fail to use the additional adjectives.
Yeah...you're both right. I need to start making that distinction. I'm all in favor of cleaning as a conservation technique, but I typically use it in the pejorative sense, as in "My previously MS-67 Morgan dollar was tarnished, so I took a wire brush to it, and see how shiny it is now?!?"
