Putting together a Dansco Morgan date set, any suggestion?

Maybe MS-60 was bad goal. I really appreciate the info everyone, thanks Richie. I do plan to get one of each mint if possible and a Peace Dollar date set would be really cool too. Does anyone make an album for Peace dollar date sets?

My collection needs a few goals to center around. I'm still working on my proof set collection and I'm aiming now towards better examples of single coins that I like. This issue is really two fold. I don't feel like getting into the slabbed coin market yet, I'm just not ready, I want a more personal collection. Second, this will really help me learn the hobby more than the way I've been doing it. A mix of old coins and new mint issues. Right now my collection is an unfocused mess, so some folders will help me center it. I bought an Ike folder and I plan doing an unc ASE set as well. After that I will probably start buy really choice coins, the best I can afford and go slowly. I like moderns coins as well, but for the older coins Morgans, Peace, Trade and gold are what do it for me, so my tastes in older coins is going to require some concessions. I'm going to take my time.

Now what about a Peace set!!??:D

    I agree, especially with #2.

Don't forget rim dings, and even obvious dings in the fields. I also think a coin with clean original surfaces looks better regardless of grade. AU morgans are frequently great looking coins.

You know, someone (Dansco perhaps...I can't remember) makes a silver dollar date album that runs from 1878-1935. That would cover both Morgan and Peace Dollars in one book. Better yet, I believe there is only one slot for 1921...which is very affordable in Morgan's and pretty spendy in Peace dollars. I'll try and find information on that album tonight (if someone doesn't before me)...I have a long day of school and travel ahead so I won't be back online until this evening.

edit: The Dansco 7172 album covers all "silver" dollars from 1878-1999 by date. By silver, I mean silver in color. So, there is a slot for each year of Morgan from 1878-1921, and one slot for each of the 4 mint marks of a Morgan. One slot for each year of Peace Dollar (1921-1935), one slot for each year of Eisenhower (1971-1978), and one slot for each of the 4 SBA years (1979-1999). http://cgi.ebay.com/Dansco-7172-Coi...ptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

I still think someone makes a just Morgan and Peace date album, but I will have to do more digging.

I think he is looking at a date set, not a date and mm set.

When I started my collection I stuck with common dates first so I could buy them raw without to many worries as I learned. I also got the Guidebook for Morgans.

Well if everyone thought that way nobody or almost nobody would collect Bust coinage. But then again, a set is what you make of it. A date set, a variety set, a set of Denver only or maybe its a set of 1955 Lincolns.

Or V nickels. So like you said - a set is what you make of it.

To the OP - sometimes cleaning is not a bad thing, as long as you know what you are doing and the impact to the coin. So you cleaned a morgan - not a big deal for one from a junk bin. Enjoy what ever you choose to do - personally I like morgans better than peace dollars. One of these days I might have to start me an album of them.

I've never completed a set of anything in my life. I'd buy 10 of the same coin if I liked the way it looked and liked the price, and I have many duplicates, triplicates and quadruplicates of certain coins -- because they were available. I never completely understood why someone would want every date and mintmark anyway.

To give me some guidance in my collecting pursuit. I'm a goal oriented person.

I know, but the album doesn't have a special spot for the Philadelphia coin because there is no mint mark. There is a pic of the pages if you look at the link. :)

What is so tough about V nickels other than the 1885 & 1886. I gotta believe that the Liberty Head Nickel is by far the easiest Barber design to complete.

I would agree...as long as your idea of a "complete set" only runs until 1912. :goof:

Also, I would add that 1912-S is also semi-though.

    Morgan Date Set

I have a Morgan Dansco album date set with all but the 1892-93-94-95. All coins are minimum of AU 55 to MS 60. I have just over $1100 in the set. I figure that I'll have to put that much into the last 4 Morgan's I need to finish the set. I just don't want to put just anything in those holes so they will probably remain empty for a while. I have about 35 or so "slabbed" Morgans ranging from MS61 - MS64. Love my Morgan's. My collection consists of different mint marks in the Dansco album not just Philadelphia mint mark.

Try putting a nice VF set together, evenly matched wear. Go ahead, do it :)

Forget about money, just try and put a nice circ set together. I have my avg circ set done, pulled out of the pit of Liberty nickels from hell, but the VF set is proving quite the challenge.

    Morgan Set Strategy

There is much wisdom concentrated in this post.

I recently picked up The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection (Travers, Editor), which covers PCGS grading procedures. I was enlightened by the discussion therein of how many AU-55/58 coins rival the lower MS coins in eye-appeal. This applies to Morgans in particular due to the strike issues presented by the O-mint coinage. If you are a novice like myself, you may find this book to be valuable, and it is in-print at a reasonable price. This and the Red Book Guide to Morgan Silver Dollars (Bowers) provide a good basis for getting to know Morgans. Best of luck with your set.

    John,
So far I haven't been able to find any XF coins that match the eye appeal of AU coins. I'll keep looking though. I do have the Red Book of Morgan Dollars, one of my first investments. Excellent book!!!! I just want to keep all of my Morgan's in the set as close together as possible. That's part of the fun of collecting them.
