It may be an authentic sintered planchet, but I've noticed many fakes on eBay of thwe Washington issue. It may be worth getting a second opinion. I'll say it's most likely an original sintered planchet. Merry Christmas.

P.S there should never be two threads about the same topic. The moderators will often close one of them.

    My opinion only

    Purchasing error.

Actually what I think this is is a coin that missed the cleaning step after the planchets were annealed and it still has the heavy layer of oxides on it that form during the heating of the planchets.

I created a very similar effect on some GW dollars by baking them in an oven. I did not perfect the recipe, and the side facing down did not get the same color, but that dark color can be created by excessive heat.

Exactly, your oven was doing the same thing that the annealing furnaces do but at a lower temperature. And the coin got a layer of oxides on it. (In the annealing furnace the planchets tumble so they get both sides exposed and heat evenly. I'm sure you didn't do that in your oven experiment which is why the color varied.) In your case you developed the oxides on the finished coin but you can see how if you had a planchet with that dark color that didn't o through the cleaning process and was struck it would come out the OP coin.

you are supposed to flip them halfway through like some other oven made things.
