Since it’s still raw, I’ll hazard that it is not authentic. And no chop marks with that much wear is suspect. I’m sure a few experts will be along soon
That's an extreme amount of wear for a Trade Dollar. I agree with Heavymetal, wear and missing chop marks.
my biggest worry is in relation to the rim / denticles. The rim is really wide and unbroken from denticles in most areas. If the denticles were so worn down there should be gaps and not just a wide rim .. I think .... but then I haven't seen so worn down trade dollars as I've always collected much higher grade ones. So YMMV. What did ANACS declare ?
Why spend money when you can prob get the correct answer here for free? Always give the weight in grams and tenths as that is a good indicator. This is not a rare date. Looks odd if it is silver. There are stores in your area that can scan it for silver content (for free) and that will also give you an answer 99% of the time.
The weight checked out ok. ANACS is relatively inexpensive to teach me a lesson. You guys can make sure I won't forget you schooled me for free! I am expecting to hear from them within a week. Please stay tuned..
Wear and the lack of chops are lousy indications of a coin's authenticity. I'll guess it comes back as genuine.
I’ll agree. it’s real in my opinion. The 78 s circulated here more than abroad it’s one of the most common dates and in western commerce was often seen. It may have been carried as a pocket piece for awhile too. I had a well worn 1874 that graded g-4. I see yours at vg8 straight grade and genuine. Especially with you telling me the weight is in tolerances.
You’re going to get a surprising lesson I think. Raw trade dollar are a scary thing. But this one is real. @ksparrow I’ll take another opinion too
It looks OK to me, but I've been fooled before on Trade dollars. The toning/patina ("skin") on it looks right, for one thing. I know that can be (and is) often faked, but it looks kosher to me in this case.
This is getting interesting. I should have done a poll. Right now it looks like 5 votes for fake and 5 votes for genuine.
A couple of the indicators I look for is the angle and proportions of Liberty's left foot and head / facial details. Both of those look fine to me on this coin. I would vote real as well. Z
Insiders opinion carries some weight, as does MaineBill's. Neither could verify for certain without having that coin in hand, but I would count both of their votes twice. Throw my vote out it you like. What do I know? I'm the Hamlet Squire of Tomfoolery . . . . Z
