Evening all Was wondering what your opinions are on this 2000P Virgina Quarter. Is it a Die Clash or Post Mint Damage? Thanks Dave
Digenes, A die clash is when the dies hit without a planchet in the chamber. Part of the obverse die can get on the reverse die and visa versa. The preceding planchet to enter the chamber will have these marks on them. Here is a diagram that shows where the dies of a morgan dollar line up. From this you can see the marks that may end up on the coin if a clash occured. Look at the area of the pic between the branch and the wing you will see a die clash mark. Now look at the diagram and you will see where it came from. Hope it helped.
diocletian I was thinking at first it might be part of the ship rope lader on the reverse of the Virgina quarter, but the more I look at it now, I can not line it up, and the marks are to large to fit. Dave
Rockdude They are incuse. I need to find a way to take better photos, as there are about 4 of them, and they get smaller the further away from the Ear they get. Dave
Post-strike damage. Probably the impression of reeding from the edge of another quarter. Clash marks will be found in the field and deepest recesses of the design, not a relatively high relief area like the back of the neck.
