How to roughly calculate Arabic AH dates on coins to Western dates.

Just multiply the Islamic year number by 0.97, and then add 622 to get the Gregorian year number. New Arabic coins soon to be minted will bear the AH date 1429.

    Example:

    1429
    X .97
    1386.13
    +622
    2008.13

Round to the nearest whole number by disregarding the decimal amount .13.

Thus an Arabic coin with the AH date of 1429 corresponds to our Western date, 2008.

    Why the difference?
First thing you should know is the Hejira (AH) Year is shorter (approx. 3%) than a Gregorian Calendar year. There are 12 Months in a an Islamic Year, just like a Gregorian year, but the Islamic months are either 29 or 30 days long. The Islamic month begins with an observation of the new moon.

Second thing to consider is that the Islamic Hejira Calendar's Year One began in the Gregorian Year 622.

Because of these factors the Islamic year only occurs within a Gregorian Year once every 33 or 34 years.

Guess What? That will happen next year. That's right! The Islamic calendar year of 1429 will be entirely within the Gregorian calendar year of 2008.(January 9 (evening) to December 28, 2008 (evening))!

Have you calculated your birth year into an AH date, yet?

Here's a roughly easy way to do that:

I was born in the Gregorian Calendar year 1935.

    1935
    -622
    1313

    1313
    0.97 = 1353.608
Round to nearest whole number = 1354

    My AH date is "1354."
