    Hey all,

I found this 1963-D penny with what I believe is a worn die. Of course I am not 100% sure, as there is no information in the literature with regard to this "anomaly" I see. I am also finding it challenging to discern between a DDO/DDR and worn dies. What say you?

    Thanks paddy...

So is this just normal aspects of the die process? I'm not saying I believe this to be an error. I'm just wondering what this is... I have discovered another similar edge even more distinct on another penny. I noticed it without magnification.

I just looked at some ODV pictures and noticed some of the anomalies as varieties. Is this what I'm seeing? What does a variety add or detract to a coin?

looks to me like the die cut the edge of lincoln's nose and throat as it was press and ejecting the coin the flat part of the cut will just vanish/end.

    Thanks Raizac,

I'm not sure... It's why I want to know the process to make this happen. I have another penny (not sure of year off top of my head) with even more pronounced edge that basically is all around front portion of bust. I can post more pictures tomorrow. The varietyvista site has them as an ODV, I think.

    Also,

Paddy, you say put the magnifier away and yet some of the errors can be better seen with magnification. I've seen posts by seasoned coin collectors asking for clear, magnified images... I have Seen all of the pictures showing the errors and anomalies under magnification within the reputable sites. I see the questionable coins either with naked eye or minor magnification first and then view under microscope. I'm not posting every questionable coin... I've gone through hundreds or more of my pennies alone looking... Knowing a needle among needles search is in store. I don't mean disrespect with this question/post... I really want to know your position on magnification.

Yes start your own separate unique thread.
When you post something on someone else's thread that is not related to the coin in question we consider that hijacking the thread.

that "flat ledge" that you see in the front of the bust is related to mechanical doubling .. or a slight shift in the die upon minting.

Anytime you see a flat ledge in such a large area think MD first.
you can always check the cent websites for DDO/DDR matches too.

oh wow .. two threads simlutaneously ... confusing.

    Claw,

It has been a learning curve for sure. I'm beginning to understand the difference. There are still some confusing times, especially when I see pictures of coins that to me seem like MD but are called DDO/DDR. If ever I have doubt I know where to post n ask.

    Thanks.
