    I pose this 1695 Leopold I thaler – looks exactly as KM 871.4

    made of silver , condition looks VF.

    D= 45 mm.

    Weight= 27.15 gr'

    and this is what bothers me.In some Ebay pages I saw it should weight 28.30 or so.

    I can not decide : is a fake? or lost 1.15 gr' because of wear .

    Please advise.

    you can tlose 1.5 grams because of wear if it weighs less than it should we may have a problem

    That is not quite true spock. To lose 1.5 grams of weight the coin would have to be worn nearly smooth. Given the amount of wear that the coin does have I would expect a weight loss of perhaps 1/10 of a gram.

    That said, the weight of these coins varied greatly depending on when and where they were minted, the weights fineness of the metal were constantly changing. For example, in 1667 the weight was reduced to 28.1 grams. In 1690 it was further reduced to 25.9 grams.

    So to answer your question gadg I would be somewhat skeptical of this coin. Not only because of the weight, but because of the diameter as well. The diameter should be 47mm - not 45.

    Thank you all

    From attached page by VCcoins we can see the same sample weights = 27.98 gr & D = 44 mm.

    So I remain l confused but with a strong feeling of a fake coin but a good one.

    I would have to say it's fake like GDJMSP said to lose that 1.15 grams the wear would be so bad the coin would be smooth and that don't seem to be the case. also you might check out my "checking your coins for authenticity" thread under coin chat it may help you out a little.

    Most if it yes. I did have to look the specific weight changes and years they occurred, but that's all.

    Given that I know that seller personally and have the utmost confidence in him; and given that he knows a hundred times more about these coins than I do - I would certainly trust his judgement before I would trust my own.
