Such a fun set! My favorite coin to collect. I have finished (?) The set, but upgrade as I can. Most are AU or MS, except for the tougher dates. My 89cc is in an OGH at VF35... looks very nice. The 93cc I sent in raw, thinking it would get a nice MS grade. Came back 58 but looks fantastic. I have a 93s that's raw and I'd say F15, along with another slabbed AG3. Good luck on your adventure and enjoy the ride!

Search "coin slab storage box" on Ebay. There are boxes for 25, 50, 100, etc. there.

Or PCGS, they got so fed up getting called out for slabbing proofs as business strikes and business strikes as proofs that they made a decision years back that ALL 1856 FE cents would be slabbed as proofs no matter what variety they were..

Interesting since my 1856 is in a PCGS slab.
I looked it up at PCGS to see what its date of submission was, but that appears not to be a matter of public record.

Your goal is admirable. Going for MS will be tough and expensive. I had 5 Morgans that I gathered as I thought they were beautiful. This past March I decided to get serious, I have 126 now, 56 are graded and of those I have 87 of the mint/year combinations and have invested about $10k. That is big bucks for old retired folks. It is a considerable investment and finishing is going to be hard as the rest are very expensive or had to get. The last 9 for me are the ones with the lowest mintages.
I recommend you not worry about VAM or other varieties. If you get some, great, but don't concentrate on them unless that is a sub goal. They are still Morgan Mint/Year. You might also consider some with DETAILS when nothing else is available. You can judge the beauty.
Keep a spreadsheet of each coin, date, mint, grade, cost and potential value (CDN is best). As you fill in the empty spots, you will begin to see where you need to concentrate. You can always replace a lower grade later. Get what you need. Morgans are the most expensive set to put together, so enjoy the ride.

I got a 50 coin aluminum box from Amazon ($54), it has a clear see though lid or you can get one that matched the bottom and sides, costs $3 more). It holds PCGS, NGC, IGC, older ANACS, and Quality Plastic Holders you can get on Amazon as well. I have filled my box and at time have to move the coins around as I get one in the middle. I also have a GSA CC that I lay flat on top of the coins and the lid closes securely and does bend of damage the GSA holder. I just got my first ANACS new style and will have to see how I handle them. Might need to work that out.

You have a great collection. Congrats on those hard ones, Not sure I will ever get there. There is one that you might consider, 1900 O/CC. It is a New Orleans mint mark, but it originally had CC. You should be able to see where the CC was scraped off. It is a one-off, but one that will fill the void when you give that 1904 PRESENT coin away. Funny, I do my coins like you, but I didn't want a really big box as my safe is not big enough, so I got 2, 50 coin boxes.

O/CC is definitely on the list to get! Such a cool coin.

I just got in a VF 1879 CC VAM 3 Capped Die. Which is a large CC over small CC. Also a funky mintmark. Plus, check out that filled G lol.

Good advice! I know it’s going to take a while, and I need to be very patient on the rarest coins....likely not getting them in MS. It’s been fun so far, I really want to put together something special....something I can look at and know the time, effort and tears that went into it lol

I have three daughters, so staring at the coins in silence is priceless!!

Ha. And it is not a pretty 1904. But my dad gave my wife that in 2004 when we got married for the “something used”.

I am trying to buy as many vams as I can as I go , but will admit I have multiple of a few of the same year now haha but its ok I have some cool coins to look at , so far I have about half MS and Half AU except for my 1887 Vam 1B is VF-35 . which is a gorgeous coin in my opinion to look at . Get what you can afford for the nicest looking coins and upgrade later if you can , I will have quite a few low graded coins in my set im sure when I am done to to my budget but ill also have a lot of nice 63/64/65 in there as well.

My '79 CC/CC looks almost like yours. I didn't get a filled in G. That might be a new VAM find.

I seriously started my set in March since I was stuck at home (I have 87 of the 96 so far and 56 are graded). It has been fun and at times frustrating finding a coin and not getting it because I didn't commit to a price. And sometimes, someone just wants it so bad, you won't get a coin. Those must be the tears you mention. My kids know I am collecting and it will be theirs one day. My grand daughter loves to touch the coins. It gets them interested and hopefully they will understand the value after I am long gone.

yeah I take my kids with me to my LCS. They have a treasure chest of inexpensive world coins and currencies and they usually don’t even charge me for what my daughters pick out. It’s helping get them interested.

I bought a few more coins this week For the set. Up to 42 now. I’m going to have a hard time buying anything less than MS because I’m addicted to the shiny mint state silver coin! But as some have advised I’ve started looking for some nice AU coins in some of the keys/semi keys and I have been pleasantly surprised with some of the pricing and quality. It gives me hope I can get this complete one day!

Forgot where I read it, never the less, I think the total investment in MS Morgans is around $100k. The author of that article said it would be hard for most people to pony up such an amount. Maybe over a 30-40 year run for the average guy that just needs to meet the objective. I continue regards, not all great quality. I did take the authors advise and pick another coin and completed it quickly - that was the Franklin half dollar. I have all the business strikes and have an MS67 Proof set less the first 3 years. Those are like Morgans, very hard to find and big bucks.
