Hi guys & gals, I have this 1958 D Lincoln Wheat Penny with a Die Chip error on the obverse and strange silver toning on the reverse. What is this??
Yes I thought about this also. But after thinking about it more spray painting would leave a harsher line across the diameter of the coin, be uneven in some spots, and be more apt to rub or peel off, and not have a shine.
Might be cleaned or something. MS70 coin cleaner does stuff like that and makes the coin tone. But you can fix it with Vaseline.
A bit hard to tell from your photos, but using your text I'd say that maybe it was stored in a situation that caused it to chemically react to what it was next to? Just a thought.
Yes, that's a little chip off the R in LIBERTY. It's not worth anything special, but it's a genuine error, nonetheless.
CudsOnCoins Lincoln Die Breaks has a category called and RIT, with a chip between the R and T. They do not have this example.
