Would you consider this worthy of a Deep Mirror Proof Like designation? Where do you draw the line on a Morgan for those attributes? I'm also trying to nail down the VAM on it. Seems to be a Large S, but I haven't spotted any other easy signs to narrow it down.
The large S seems to have a ding near the center, unfortunately (although this could be from the die - the fields are so pristine on this I have trouble seeing how an impact happened *just* there). The LL's in doLLar also seem to have mild doubling and an odd clash on the tail of the 2nd L. Not seeing a VAM that specifically mentions those diagnostics, but it might help narrow it down...
Tough to reliably determine PL with pictures, in hand I’m pretty good. DM with just ok pictures is downright impossible to say accurately. It definitely looks PL to me and can’t say DM. Try the newspaper trick: hold the coin on a newspaper and see how many lines you can clearly see reflected on the coin. A prooflike coin should have a minimum of 2-4 inches visible, while for a coin to be a deep-mirror prooflike it should have as much as 6-8 inches of lines clearly visible.
Not even close to DMPL. I would say it is not even prooflike. It is a nice, lustrous, extremely common date. I don’t draw any lines, as the newspaper tests are useless. The only tests that count are TPG designations. As common as PL and DMPLS are for that date, the bar is high. I see no deep mirrors, cameo, or die polish lines. It is just a nice 64 Morgan. The marks on the cheek take a 65 grade off of the table.
Well, i just meant if you were not sure if you wanted to get it graded the newspaper trick is helpful or if you like to grade your own coins for your collection. So, i dont think its useless. NGC has some good info on the subject... https://www.ngccoin.com/boards/topic/115116-dmpl-vs-pl/
As a lifelong collector, trust me. It is of no value. Better off looking for the obvious signs—cameo, striations, and a mirror like surface. High grade lustrous Morgans will also reflect as much as many PL coins. If one collects Morgans long enough, one can recognize a PL or DMPL coin right away. I see this on eBay all the time. Somebody lists a raw Morgan with pictures of a newspaper or soup can reflecting text, and they advertise the coin as PL. that is misrepresenting the coin, as only certified coins can be described as PL or DMPL. I also see others advertised as “Semi-PL.”. There is no such thing.
Definitely have to agree, especially on a date like that. Most bigger coins will reflect if you try it hard enough, it really is one of those things where you know it when you see it and the bar is high on that date/mm
Ditto for the first coin. The one above is closer, but I still think it misses the mark - at least the DMPL mark. Z
