I haven't started one of these threads in a while and it's always fun to hear what everyone is up to :)

What kinds of collections is everyone currently working on? I think it's a great way to open our eyes to items of interest that we may have otherwise overlooked.

    I'll start....

STILL worlking on my date set of Morgans. I only have 5 holes to fill and 2 to upgrade...almost there! :D

I've dipped my toes into the waters of French gold (thanks GD ;) ) and will probably add to that when the right one comes along. Half of the fun is in the hunt!

I've been having a ton of fun with a Dansco Type Set album. I'm trying to fill it with dates that are significant to me personally (birthyears etc) where I can, and in the spots I can't I add 100 years if possible. For example I chose an 1897 IHC for Joe's birthyear + 100 years. It's been a great learning experience as I've been researching each type before I make any purchases. The Bowers Type Set Redbook came out just as I began this endeavor...thank goodness as it's been immensely helpful!

My 1997 bullion set for Joe is coming along nicely. Although I think I've almost exhausted all of the possible additions I can make to this. Now I may add other interesting (world & US) pieces to it (possibly commems, world currency, etc) and have thought about doing the 100 year thing with this collection as well. Who knows, maybe I'll come across one of them purdy gold angels dated 1897 to add to this one ;)

I've slowly begun dabbling with Walkers as well. I've always loved these but unfortunately they have taken a back seat to the type set lately. But not for too much longer.

And of course we cannot forget about Joe's ever-growing collection of world coins. His favorites being anything odd-shaped. He currently has 2 large binders containing more than 180 different countries...Fun Stuff!

Those have been my primary pursuits lately...what are yours?

My primary goal is working on spanish empire and colonial pieces. Ever since I turned toward this direction, I have felt my interest growing more and more with my collection. I have decided to look into other pieces from this same time, but I haven't worked out all the details on that yet. There is something pleasing to me about having a coin from this period, because this period of time seems almost tied to silver and gold production.

Right now, I still haven't decided HOW I will even build the collection I have begun already. I pick up pieces that interest me, here and there, but I haven't decided whether I should build the collection by year, denomination or colony of origin, or even mint mark or assayers. At this point, I'm all over the board, but I have tried to gather an example from as many different colonies as possible. Each denomination can have it's own particular appeal - I have mostly 1 or 2 reales, a few halfs, with the 1 real being my favorite. I have no 4 or even 8 pieces (8, I think, is the most popular - although I have heard that 2 is the most collected, and 4 is the most rare - I don't really know).

Currently put most of my sets on hold, i'm just working on two sets at the moment.

    1) 5 Reichspfennigs of Nazi Germany, Berlin mint only by date in UNC.

    2) English Hammered silver pennies, generally one from each monarch starting with Alfred the Great in 871 and running to Richard II's demise in 1399. Although this is a broad collection rather than an indepth one, i'm gathering more pennies from the 1135-1154 period, hoping to have one of each type of that monarch.

I might collect some by mint also... give the series real character.

Mostly I'm concentrating on sprinkling system and sod and then finishing a basement. When those projects allow I concentrate on my Lincoln cent and Kennedy Half type sets. I have a good start on an Eisenhower dollar type set and will work on that too. I can't delve into anything too costly just yet. I almost forgot, I'm working on collecting the silver proof sets of the state quarters.

I've just about finished up my uncirculated Roosevelt Dimes -- I've got all the silver ones now. I'm also working on Mercury dimes and Barber Dimes. Secondary are my 2-cent and 3-cent pieces as well as the clad dollars from 1971 on.

I'm working on putting together my US proof modern commemorative collection 1982-present in the original US mint packaging. I've just ordered the proof John Marshall dollar, and all I need is the 1996 Cauldron Olympic Proof 5 Dollar. Anyone know where I can get one? No luck on eBay.

Way too much! Hooked on buffalo nickels, and trying to complete my year collection with VG+ in all years (and have about 4 to go... expensive...). Also grabbing high quality MS 65+ buffalo's whenever I see them at a price I can live with (got a great 1913 Type II MS 65 this weekend with a light golden toning!). Would love to add a few nice proofs.
Also working on upgrading some indian heads in my collection (have every year, but some are G only, and I'd like to upgrade those on the key years). Also grabbing high MS samples in these when available at a good price, and would love to get a nice proof sample!
In general, I am sort of working on what I think of as 'west' coinage (buffalos, certain commems (got a nice 1926S ANACS 65 Oregon this week!) indian heads). Other than that, I am looking for nice type pieces (got an awesome MS 65 two cent piece, but it has a perfect cut in one rim, that I need to identify as either defect, or post mint. Normally, I'd say post mint, but it is a perfect angled cut, with no other damage to coin, and I can't imagine what force could do that without bending the coin in some way... if an error, I got a steal... if not, still love looking at this incredible MS piece I got dirt cheap.
I'd like to add a 1955 and 1956 proof set just to finish my proofs from 1955 to current (that sounds better than 1957 to current).
And finally working on my proof silver american eagle set.
Oh, and I'll grab any monster toned coin when I see it... I got four awesome sunset red toned peace dollars a few weeks ago.
And that is about it... besides anything else I just can't pass up...

Don't really have any sets of anything, never considered putting together a type or date set. I have always just purchased what "caught my eye". Currently I have been putting all my finances in supplies rather than coins. I just completed encasing my entire collection in air-tites and ANACS-style slabs, what a job that was!!!!

Now that is over and I can get back to coins. I sort of got interested reading a few threads and I am thinking about putting together an IGC set of ms-70 Silver Eagles. I already have 2 so I guess I have already started. Also I thought it would be nice to put together a nice set of unc Britannia's to go along with the Eagles.

You will have to get your MS70 ASE from ICG or SGS....In the other grading Co. there is no such thing as a complete set of MS70 ASE.

I am trying Peace Dollars (MS-60+), Lincoln Cents (VF+), Mercury Dimes (VF+) and anything else that shines. :)

No even close as I just started (again) after quite a few years absence.

I enjoy this board and all the info you post here.

Not true Speedy - you can put together a set of MS70 or PF70 DCAM ASE's graded by PCGS or NGC either one. I rather doubt you could it with ANACS though.

My bad--I read it somewhere and looked at NGC's site but when I did (last year sometime) I don't think it had the 1991 PF70 coin so that made it one away...I should have checked again.

Don't trust the pop reports too much for specifics. I own several coins that you won't find in listed in either company's pop reports. And they weren't slabbed recently - several years ago in fact.

I am busy as always collecting British Commonwealth coins & banknotes.I have sent an email to a contact in England to place an
order to buy some postal orders from various countries. He is the Secretary of the Postal Order Society,so I requested the P.O.S. Members' Sales List,& placed my order. There'll be some very happy members,as I have had 20 Quid cash to spend. There was 5 Manx 50p. postal orders issued at 5 different post offices on the Isle of Man.These are British Postal Orders bearing Manx datestamps.I thought that these are a good buy for 2 Quid each,
considering that they were issued back in 1996.I recently bought a few British Postal Orders issued at various Field Post Offices off a guy in Florida.I have bought them unresearched,as they bear datestamps with 'F.P.O.'& a number.I hope that they have arrived in today's mail.

    Aidan.
