Please guess the grade of the 1941-S Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, Full Steps, & + grade. As always, comments welcome, please don't forget to vote in the poll, thank you.
Something about this one looks different to me but I can't quite place what it is. It looks relatively clean but not exceptional enough to warrant a super high grade. I ended up putting it right in the middle of the UNC range at MS 65 (and not 5fs as there are too many breaks).
I voted 66+ no full steps. Nice coin, clean surfaces, good luster. No full steps because of the bridge under the 3rd pillar.
I'm at MS66 with this one, no full steps. There are some hits on the jaw which I think could knock it down to MS65...but with the color and eye appeal I think it gets the bump to a straight MS66. Steps I have at 5-4-4-5...so no FS.
I would be at 65, no FS, and +. I say 65 versus 66 due to too many hits in PFA, the cheek, but + due to overall luster and appearance.
Even at 66 it has originality, no steps, And I am sure that the die state was a pain to photo. Nice looking Jefferson.
Good eye, it is definitely the Large S variety. In the title of the thread, I mentioned a Bonus. As we can clearly see from the step photo, the coin has been cracked from the ANACS holder and I will be submitting this to NGC so that I can add it to my registry set. If you didn't get ANACS assigned grade of MS65, now you get second bite at the apple. I will update once I have the grade back from NGC.
Interesting. I could see the old ANACS soap slab being a little strict with this coin...but I just see it as a bit better than a 65, honestly. What are you hoping to hear back from NGC? Will you be happy with a 65, or going for the upgrade?
I think it is a 66, and I hate the 41-S in my registry set. My thinking was, why not put the cool variety with a lower grade in my registry set and find a nice raw gem for my album collection.
