Can anyone please help me with the grade on this 1936 lincoln cent? I bought it for $1.50. it was labeled as uncirculated. So I'm guessing something like MS64 RD BN? Any help is appreciated.
Well, it's right at the threshold of Mint State, but whether it's an AU58 "slider" or an MS63 BN with nice hints of red, is hard for me to say. It's one of those that kinda walks that thin line. Flip it. Heads? It's AU58. Tails? It's MS63 BN.
The carbon spot at mid date kills it for me. Sorry but carbon spots on coins just ruins the coin. Ive even have had graded buffalos that before they were graded looked great ,then over the spots appear on the surface .....and theres nada one can do.
Why does it matter what PCGS would call it? PCGS also commonly calls corroded and green copper “BN”. The threshold between the color designations on copper are wildly inconsistent at the TPGs and they are not guaranteed, so let’s just agree on the grade of AU58-MS62ish. To me it looks AU with a bit of rub on Abe. I also agree with above that the spot on the date is a bit unsightly. But, for $1.50 it is a nice coin.
Not on your coin. I see it rather commonly in PCGS graded holders on coins they call “brown”. I was making a point to @lordmarcovan not to you.
It doesn't matter at all, nor should it, since the coin is not a good candidate for certification, at PCGS or elsewhere. I was merely using PCGS as a frame of reference. Surely you should have been able to see that. Your opinion of PCGS is as irrelevant as my observation was. Let's keep the discussion focused on the coin at hand rather than the relative quirks of the TPGs.
