Hi, I'm playing around with a plugable digital microscope I got online. I have a an 1812 bust half dollar and I'm wondering if anyone thinks it could be an 1812/1 large 8 variety, or am I just getting carried away with some scratches on it?
You need better images and post them in full if you want the correct answers to your questions. Your photos arent clear enough for an educated guess.
It looks like the large 8 to me, but as to whether the 2 is over a 1....IDK. Someone more astute than me will hopefully have an answer.
thanks. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to use the scope and will revert when I can improve the photos.
Yes the heavy die break crossing the reverse is pretty obvious. A Rarity 3, though, so 201-500 known in all grades.
You are correct that the OP coin is an O-106, but you've GOT to get better pics of your 1812/1 large 8. Can't tell anything from those fuzzy images. But I remember the story of your cherrypicking that one. Major score.
I'd love to get better pics, but unfortunately she no longer lives with me. She walked off along with almost my entire bust half collection several years ago when I had them all at home over the weekend to show my prospective Bust Half Nut Club sponsor. I doubt that I will ever replace her since that kind of cherypick just doesn't happen more than once.
Stolen...one of those cases where everyone (including the police) had a pretty good idea who did it, but had no proof.
On a brighter note, the coins were all fully insured (the reason I am so high on Hugh Woods) and it gave some other collector the chance at a once in a lifetime cherrypick. Edit: Hugh Wood--not Woods.
But getting back to the OP, the 106 is one of my favorite die marriages for the year. It's hard to believe that many coins were struck with the dies in the sad shape they were in.
