Very interesting. Does this type of coin have numismatic value like the hobo nickel?? http://cgi.ebay.com/1877-Trade-Doll...11978QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262 Also, I'd like some feedback on this seller. They seem to sell exceptional coins and have terrific photos. Anyone buy from them?
Yes they do havea collector following. Some are very crude and low value while others are very well done and have high values. With these it the craftmanship that is important.
That one's been up for sale for a while. I think it's a bit pricey. I'd like one to round out my trade dollar set, along with a box dollar.
Altered coins do have a following no doubt. Not my cup of tea and that one seems a bit pricey although I must admit I've never seen one. Finally, I just can't resist. Wasn't it Howie Mandell that said "it's my potty and I'll cry if I want to"?
It was sold in an earlier Heritage auction for a lot less than what that seller has it listed for, something like $150-175 or so. It is a crude example, and not worth the price the seller has it at to me. Somebody liked Ms. Liberty a wee bit bottom heavy too.
All it takes is someone reporting it. You cannot have enemies on eBay, they will destroy you for every nitpicking thing possible.
Yes, Potty Dollars are cousins to Hobo Nickels. And like Hobo Nickels there are originals and modern recreations. The example you cited in the eBay auction appears to be an original but, in my opinion, it is grossly overpriced.
I must say, that when I saw the Auction that I was ROTFLMAO! I am sure that these type of coins have a following and have collectibility. To be honest though, this is what should be done to every Counterfeit Trade Dollar that comes out of China. That will alert everyone that they are not worth the crap* (insert more explicitive word here if you want) that they are made of! Frank
I have a seated liberty "Potty" coin that was minted in New Orleans in 1861. It is rare since most potty coins are found to be trade dollars, not US minted currency, and even more rare since it is on a confederate-minted Half dollar. I have no idea what it is worth, since not that many are sold, but did find one example on a trade dollar that sold for $400. I can't imagine mine being worth less than that. And imho, those that scoff at these having value are wrong. They are just as much a part of coin history as any other, and if you think about it, what is the difference between an old coin that someone carved an image on, and say, a mis-strike of an otherwise common coin? It is all about rarity in my view.
I've seen several on Seated Liberty coins (all denominations except half dime I think), but not quite as often as I've seen them on Trade Dollars. Not sure which version is more rare, but all are unique so I'm sure it doesn't matter too much. Would like to see pics of yours if you can post them!!!
Sure... Funny thing is, I had no idea what a potty coin was, and was going through my old coins looking to sell a few. I had not looked closely at my coins, and had not looked at this one since obtaining it at around 13 yrs old and when looking at it then felt I had bought a worthless coin. At that young age, I didnt know what they were supposed to look like, I just wanted it because of it's age. I bought it from another kid who said he had got it from his grandpa... I posted about "this totally ruined coin" on another forum, and then they replied that it was not just a defaced coin, but indeed a "potty dollar".. It is in really good condition...
