Our firstborn, a daughter, was born in 2010. When I started getting interested in coin collecting I didn't realize just how few and dar between the valuable coins were (monetary wise), thankfullye that wasn't my main interestc! By the time we have grandkids, just maybe they will appreciate the historical value of coins from the earlier and mid 1900s

My son was born about the same time and he is way into his collection.

Welcome to CT. I hope your daughter stays interested. We have 13 grand kids and 20 great grand kids. I made them all family tree type sets. It was a job but the older ones seem to enjoy them.

Welcome and you can buy, or create on your own, Birthday Sets. I made one for my nephew, born 2017, with 3 Proof 70 Silver Eagles and 2 gold coins all dated 2017 and bought a Lighthouse 5 coin holder. Didn't cost too much and you can design your own. Good luck with your collecting.

A long time ago I was buying 20 Mint Sets every year. Each grandchild got one on Christmas. So most of the grandkids have one for every year of their life. Then, it got too expensive as the mint started making so many coins. I stopped the mint sets and only got them for new born grandkids and great grandkids.

My grandpa (born 1899) got me into collecting and part of that was always some kind of something from the mint for BD and or Xmas.

My kid got his first mint package yesterday. So on it goes.

@Inspector, I'd be interested in seeing your family tree type set? I did genealogy books for my Niece and her kids (then did one of myself, of course) I'd love to see what someone else came up with. Thanks!

Getting your children into coin collecting can give them lasting memories which last a lifetime.

I received this 1814 half dollar when was in elementary school back in the early 70's. It contains a mountain of memories from my childhood. It's my most valued and cherished possession. It's one of the few coins I own, which will never be for sale. To me, it's priceless.

Create memories with your children. They won't realize how valuable they are till much later in life.

Oh i love this idea! Im hoping our kids will gain interest in collecting. My daddy passed away in 2017 and my mama followed him in 2019. Upon going through some things my husband and i found some pennies that are silver in color (brain fart) I cant remember off the top of my head if they were pennies and they are locked up in the man cave in the lock box. 99.8% certain they are pennies though.

Remember, the WW II 1943 Wheat Cents were made of steel. A lot of people refer to them as silver in color.

That's quite a "first coin" to receive; puts my 1923 merc to shame. Just out of curiosity, do you have anything to do with the star carved into the obverse?

Nope, that was there when I got it. I always love that star. It makes it uniquely mine.

Very cool. And welcome. I’ve bought coins for my son when he gets older. Hopefully it’s something we can enjoy together

Thanks Inspector!! I remember the thread that was from. Its similar to what I did for all my nieces and nephews (just not as big) that I did for them last Christmas.
I did a scrap book with our family history on it and put coins for each birth year for most of the people on my tree (my direct ancestors, mainly) When I get the time, I'll take pictures and make a thread for it, if anyone is interested.
    Thanks again!!

When you have a family as big as mine I thought it was important to get everyone involved in my collection. Someday it will be busted up and shared with some of my descendants and those that wanted a memento will not have one. Of course, that may only be important to me.
