It seems my set of raw rainbow toned Jefferson Nickels is growing daily. This is a very nice batch with some wildly toned and some more subtly toned examples as well. The war nickel in the group is amazing. A FS nickel with absolutely booming luster shining through that swirling cobalt blue iridescent toning that only exists on war nickels. A grade it an MS66 with a shot at an MS67. The photos don't really do it justice, but it would not look out of place in a registry set. As usual, any comments or opinions are welcome!
Nice nickels. This brings up a question. I have a set of the nickels they made a few years back to commemorate Lewis and Clark and had a Harris folder I put them in. I noticed the other day, they had all toned a nice golden color, a few beginning to rainbow around the outside edges. Is this common with Harris folders? They've only been in it a couple of years, so it took me by suprise. Guy~
Very nice LeHigh. I just love that 1938-S, one of the nicest Jeff's I think I have ever seen. How common is it for the nickel's to tone in this way? I have seen a bunch of the silver war nickels tone...but the nickel coins seem to do so a lot less frequently.
Lehigh, I am on the search for toned coins, particularly Kennedy's, franklins, Jeffersons, and morgans. I have a few cents that have some nice natural toning, but they are harder to see versus the larger varieties. I wouldn't want you to divulge your source(s) if that would be a problem, but if not, where do you find such impressive rainbow toned coins? I've been buying a few off of eBay, but it is hit and miss as to quality. Only been buying certified ones on the Bay. John
John The answer to that question really depends on the quality of the coin. For lower end coins and raw coins (under $100), I search E-Bay. Most of the higher end coins I buy at auction from either Heritage, Superior, Goldberg, and occasionally DLRC. If you are buying certified coins, you should concentrate on E-Bay sellers with quality photos. Heritage is great for toned coins because the photos show the surfaces very well but don't usually do the toning justice. Therefore, if the toning is moderately attractive in a Heritage photo, it is usually extremely attractive in hand. Paul
I am a little worried about the originality of the toning on the first one. Yes the coin is very attractive, but I don't recall ever seeing a completely blue toned business strike Jefferson nickel before. In addition, the pattern is also a little disturbing. The surface may have had some chemical brushed on the surfaces. I know that MS70 has had this effect on copper, I wonder if it can do the same on a nickel. While we are talking about blue toning. Take a look at this photo I just took of the 1944-D war nickel reverse. This thing has the most booming iridescent cobalt blue toning I have ever seen. The strike is fantastic and the steps have a good shot at FS IMO.
The blue toning is gorgeous. I think I might still have a couple of blue ones. I remember keeping them cuz of the color.Very,very nice............John

I'm trying to put together a complete set of toned nickels from 1938-1980 (or as late of a date as I can find). I only started my attempt at a full set about 5 months ago. Lehigh, Thanks for the tips on where to purchase the toned coins. I have bought from Heritage -- in fact bought a toned coin recently from them that I hope is sitting under the tree as we speak. Haven't tried the other places, but I'll take a look. Thanks for sharing. :smile John
Hi Lehigh96, thx for sharing, like the pics.. I like the the 1938, I happen to accidentally find one in the change that i received. The thing which struck me with it is the way the "3" almost looks like "5" to the naked eye. The one i got is as shiny as the new ones and i almost thought is the news one till i saw it carefully and decided to save it Just curios, was 1938 the first year that the Jefferson nickels were minted? I have 1936 buffalo.. Happy Holidays to all.
