What are some interesting/good coins that are currently found in circulation that would be good for young collectors (Scouts) to watch for?

My stepson is 12, he enjoys looking for canadian pennies. Also, pennies and nickels are still readily available in circulation, so they can find good stuff in pocket change. Just make sure they have fun and enjoy it.

I'd think they would find state quarters fun.

A scout could do a set of dime...nickels...quarters...for starters.

And JD is right...world coins are great.

The best bet is to get the blue folders for whichever denominations are of interest and try to find the nicest coins to fill them with. You'll spot some varieties along the way and these can make good additions to a collection. Also watch for errors, obsolete, and foreign coinage and the occasional token or medal. You can find many varieties in The Cherrypickers Guide, the archives of this and other web sites, and at the CONECA site. Questions will usually get answered here if you have anything specific. Don't forget the new quarters too. While none of the regular ones are likely to ever be scarce, they are fun and there are some neat varieties. Watch for high grades among these.

Joe likes to hunt through all of our loose change for anything with his birthyear on it.
Maybe equip them each with one or two of these LINK (scroll down a bit to the mint set holders) and turn them loose!

It's fun to try and find wheat cents in circulation.

Owenm08 has a good point...you might want to get a few boxes of Cents (I think it is $25 face value) too look through...you will find many dates and you might find a 98, 99, 00, 01, Wide AM....

Have him go to any bank and get a few rolls of change to see what he finds. That can be fun in itself!

I believe Lincoln cents are the best coins for a young collector. Nowadays, I'd recommend a circulated collection of Lincoln Memorial cents. They run from 1959 to date.

Along the way, if you find any "wheaties" then I'd take them out for later; when you're ready to do a little more than go through change and rolls.

The State Quarters are ok, but everyone is doing that. And you'll have to wait a few more years to complete the set.

Clad Roosevelt dimes are easy to find. I believe you can find a set of circulated dimes from 1965 through 2005 without too much trouble. It may take a little persistance to pick out the ones from the 60s. Don't worry about the San Fran proofs.

    Good luck!!!
