Two 1940 MS Jefferson nickels GTG, and steps fs or not, both imaged with light from above.

    Coin #1: MS66
There is a mark on the forehead that should preclude MS67 as they are very tough on grading this date. There looks to be a vertical mark on the steps above the "I" in Monticello that should preclude the FS designation.

    Coin #2: MS67
There is a vertical mark above the "T" in Monticello that should preclude the FS designation.

Edited to Add: I find these photo very hard to judge.

I'd give both coins a 66. No full steps on either. Just a bit of weak areas overall.

    67 for both. No FS

After looking at the photos on my phone instead of computer, I think MS67 is correct for both. The oversized photos were making that mark look worse than it really is.

MS 66 ...I'm guessing FS (can't tell as it's somewhat blurry)
MS 65 ...I'm guessing not FS (again blurry)

I'm at MS66 on the first coin. It has a couple focal marks on the obverse and a couple on the rim on the reverse. But, the luster looks nice.

MS67 for the second coin. Luster doesn't appear quite as full but fewer marks.

Neither is FS. IMHO, I think the first coin has better eye appeal.

I think that both are MS 67. Neither are FS. The first coin is a low level 67, and the second coin is a solid 67. I like them both. That photo would not play on a phone. I looked at it with my iPad Pro 11”.

Well, I mean, since you called me to action...lol

(Disclaimer: I'm not an excellent grader but I'm fine with making mistakes.)

Coin #1: I see this one as an MS67FS (since it's in a PCGS slab)
Coin #2: I see this one as an MS67 without FS

Both are gorgeous coins, thanks for sharing.

Both MS 66 and both have no FS due to contact marks.

    67FS

I believe the first coin is a FS for sure but the second coin appears to have some bridging of the steps between columns 2 and 3. Therefore, the first coin is the higher grade. Both coins are very eye appealing and have blazing luster.

Sorry about the images, dealing with a SAMSUNG pad and phone which neither take a good image.
My old Nikon point and shoot took great images....until the battery door fell off. lol

The PCGS specimen was graded 65 and FS , my eyes say MS 66 and 5 steps, as for the NGC specimen was also a 65 and no FS.....and agin my eyes say 66 also and 5 fs also.
The time peroid I had these graded pcgs grades were always to my eye a grade higher than NGC.
I would always advise anyone asking me if you want a higher grade send it in to pcgs, if you want a truer grade send them to NGC. I did find that durring this time as a Jefferson collector that NGC was not as liberal grade wise as pcgs.
Of course we all want higher....but as for myself I rather have a true grade ,as we all have seen coins in slabs that are no way near the number on the slab.

I think they are both undergraded, even by 1939 standards.

Both are nice coins no doupt, but I am not the type who break out ,and regrade.
Usually if i do crack out a coin it never goes back into a slab.
I totally lost interest in this series after 2005. The new design is horrible ,and from cent to quarter all need be redesigned ...... however I'm sure the US will continue to mint coinage that isn't needed ,as in dollars, halfs, and cents.
The vault at the Federal Reserve bank in Baltimore is filled with thousands of bags of dollar coins.
And no one wants them.....I doupt that any retail business places a coin order for dollars of halfs.
The U S isnt as progressive as other nations....in their money designs. And Lastly a few years back when they did the Walkers, Standing liberty quarters, and Mercury dime in gold... was such a disservice to the artist and their designs.......considering that they have and own the copy rights .
