1880-S Morgan with double die chipped 8's

This wasn't particularly remarkable until I took it under the scope:

I'm leaning towards VAM-53 based on the large S and the die chips. Thoughts? Also, any idea what causes the interesting inverse shadow effect under the date?

The shadow effect you see is called "Pull-Away Toning".

FWIW, I was lucky enough to view the Sunnywood Collection of toned Morgan Dollars quite a few years ago when they were on display at the PCGS tables at the FUN Show. It was AMAZING! It was not long afterward that the collection was broken up and sold at auction.
