True story. I woke up one morning and the Lucilla sestertius I was admiring the night before was gone from the nightstand and nowhere to be found. I asked my wife if she'd seen her and she just shook her head. Later after I finally found the coin, which had rolled under the bed, I thought of this thread and two very different all-American songs...
Julia Domna, AE23 of Tavium, Galatia. AD 193-217. IOYΛIA CEBACTH, draped bust right / TAOYIANΩN, Nemesis standing left, holding bridle and raising right hand to her face.
Nero (54-68) Æ As Lugdunum O: IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR P P P Bare head right; small globe at point of neck. R: S-C Victory, winged, draped, moving left, holding in both hands shield inscribed S P Q R. RIC I 543
A blast from the past... oh 1984...I miss ya! Being from a cold climate - I remember the trench coat style...
Thanks Clavdivs, that was educational! The Style Council got past my radar at the time, but I'm a fan, of sorts, of the Clash, the Beat, and (...brief segue...) the Dream Factory.
...Oops, that was the Dream Academy. ...The Prince I gravitate to most is a little earlier than that.
That is One Serious Thing of a Syracuse tetradrachm. With that vocal approach, I'm still more about Ella Fitzgerald --until someone else does better. But it's not like she has a monopoly!
@+VGO.DVCKS Well there was "The Jam"... incredibly awesome.. Band broke up.. and the lead singer (Paul Weller) then founded the "Style Council".. good times..
Thanks, Clavdivs, for your efforts toward my ongoing enlightenment! What is it with English songwriters and irony? It seems to persist, relentlessly, through every decade.... Not sure why, but I'm moved to throw this in. With The Beat, more from the first (and best) wave of Ska revival. But I even like the video for this. Cracks me up every time. ...Except, I give up, What is the Coin? I'm seeing an Antonine (Aurelius or Verus?), with the by then iconic motif of religious implements. --On that basis, I'd be thinking Aurelius, but I can't squint out the obverse legend.
Well that bring tears to my eyes.. and so many memories...black pants / white socks.. However - the ultimate:
Clavdivs, those are Just That Good. Especially with the videos. Put existing, dim memories of "Our House" on a whole different level. (If you can remember the '80's, you weren't there.) Really, what Brits, anyway, were doing with videos at this point evokes the first couple of decades of cinematography; Nosferatu, etc. What was lacking in technology was more than compensated by something one might characterize, a little pompously, maybe, as artistic vision.
...Yeah, Joy Division isn't for the faint of heart. On that front, it's like, Teacher, I Raise My Hand.
For sure... what made them great was the pure unadulterated originality.. in the music and the videos. A backlash against the backlash ... wonderful!
...Well, okay, here's the Dream Academy anyone needs to sustain intelligent life (with my favorite video, from the ones on YouTube). Written about some truly great English accoustic guitarist, whose name escapes me, who fell victim to depression and suicide, like the lead singer of Joy Division.
An excellent song! I listen to it on Amazon music every few weeks. Now this guy was doing something a bit different in 1981.
