I keep a low profile but security and the risk of loss is one of the reasons why I've lost some of my enthusiasm about coins/numismatics. In my other areas of collecting, I can openly talk about being a collector since a lot of people don't associate those collectables with great monetary value. If I show someone portions of my postcard collection they enjoy the history aspect of it and don't even think about $$$$ despite some of my postcards being worth some decent cash since they are rare. Anyways crooks would have no idea of how to sell the items or distinguish low value from high value.

Nice. I've not seen such a variety all together since I took Hunter Safety in junior high. Loved that class!

It’s saddening to read how many folks have to keep it secret for safety reasons.
I consider myself blessed as never had such experience.
First I was living in a country where security was not on the top of the menu (break ins were common), but literally no one knew anything about coins, so chance for the thieves to sell or even understand the value.
And now I’m living in one of the safest cities in the world.

Anyway I don’t own any crazy expensive coin, not into precious metals either. But I’m definitely not afraid of sharing my hobby with my friends.

If you had a significant amount of PMs you would probably feel differently. Most people that don't tell anyone at all have significant holdings or a lot of bullion which is really untraceable if someone steals it. Most people will share with some people, but regardless of where you live especially in times like now it's a good idea to still be choosy about what friends get to know

I know this may sound foolish, but I do wish I could be more open regarding my hobby in coin collecting. It would just be nice to have someone to talk to regarding the hobby. Not that you guys aren't great and all, but to have a drink with someone while we discuss die states or wear patterns as we discuss why we collect what we collect would be nice on occasion. Still, mentality is that we have to keep things "hush hush" for the protection of our collection and I understand that. It is just difficult to have personal connections regarding numismatic interests in the cornfields of Indiana.
