will the 2005 first day coin cover for the bison nickel make a good investment for possible resale? I'm not real familiar with the coin covers.

    Thanks

Way overpriced. You can still buy first day covers for peace nickel.

and you can still get first day covers for some of the first state quarters... doesn't seem to be much interest in them.

I agree they are overpriced, but I bought two anyway. I bought them in the belief they may be my best chance to get the finest condition possible. I don't care about the cover portion, I just want high mint state Bison's. I'm going to try with the mint sets and 6 pc mint/proof sets when they come out two. If the two I receive are disappointing, I can always return them- probably wouldn't though.

-Just received them and opened one. Not a high grade P, best I've seen but very disappointing.

    Worthy of return on both.

They used to call these PNCs in the 70s when they first became popular (relatively speaking). It stood for Philatelic-Numismatic Cover. In my eyes, it blended two hobbies which are suprisingly incompatibe. In my experience, very few coon collectors also actively collect stamps, and vbice versa. So, neither side was especially happy about he marriage of the two in a collectible.

Most (all?) PNCs have never been a good investment. If the Buff nickel is HUGE and stays HUGE (yes to #1, not sure about #2) then MAYBE the item will increase in value, but otherwise I would say it is a poor investem , unless you can make a few bucks off speculative price increases. But, you will have to know when to sell and be quick about it.

It is a collectible, and is only worth the happiness you get from owning it. If you are looking for $$$ rewards, I would not go near them. I did buy a quarter one from a sentimental favorite state, but that is about it.

This is mistaken idea that many have. The odds of getting a high quality coin in a FDC are about the same as finding one in a roll. The coins in the FDCs come right from those being issued for circulation.

If you want to find high quality business strike coins your best bet always has been to look for them in Mint sets.

I have a few of FDC I have gotten after they have sold out and have gotten them for less than the mint sold them for...sometimes half of the issue price.

And GDJMSP is right...my FDC have coins in them that have bag marks and all sorts of marks.....

GD you're absolutely right. So much for the first strike (or first day) theory. My two pups are going back. I'll take the hit on the shipping.

As for finding a high quality Bison, good luck. I have found a few very high qulaity Bison Nickels (many D's and a couple of P's). But, that's after cracking open over a hundred rolls. Funny thing is I was looking for error coins. I found way, way, way more error coins than high grade examples of the Bison. Since I have found both errors and high grades, I'm more than happy.

Didn't see your post- returned them this morning. One might have been okay the P obverse was prooflike but plenty of scratches but the other had 3 deep scratches on the P obverse, it was laughable. I wouldn't have given 10 cents for it. (at least this year)
