I am at a total loss how anyone could quote my obviously worthless grading pages and consider that coin Extremely Fine. Lately I have been considering if it is time to take down my website since it is so outdated and will not be updated now that I am locked out of it by ForVm software changes. I apologize to anyone who has been led astray by my inability to make myself even clear enough to allow that coin to seem EF. While from a different mint, my only slabbed coin is a Constantius II campgate (despite anything written on the slab label by people who have no business being in the position to grade coins for a living). It is not MS65, IMO, either but that seems minor when compared to calling the OP coin here EF. For what it is worth, right facing busts on Constantius II campgates are not common. I do not own one.
You misunderstood. This forum is full of (way too) nice people who will like the post, but will not tell him that the EF should be read without the E (at most, i would grade it less - has no face). So i pointed him to your page, with the idea that he will figure out himself the grade. I still find your site worth reading from time to time, although it touches a small, marginal area of my collection (JD), but the style makes it still interesting to read.
As I stated in the opening of my post, this was my first attempt at grading an ancient and was looking for comments and advice. I had actually no clue to grading. But, I now do.
Here's my Constantius II camp gate. I won't try to grade it! (It doesn't really matter in the age of high res photos on the internet). Constantius II, 324-5 London (the London mint closed in 325/6). FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C. PROVIDENTIAE CAESS, PLON (RIC VII 298)
I think this is a great example of why grading ancient coins is so difficult - obvious and quite serious wear on the laurel, but one of the most attractive coins of this type I've seen. Though choice and near extremely fine is probably accurate, I'm not sure it does the piece justice.
Hallo Orange Julius, I think the reverse is not a die match, your coin has 6 stones on the top raw, Victor_Clark's coin has 7.
Yes on second look not a reverse die match... but maybe still an obverse match. Hard to tell. I know that the bareheaded busts for these coins are rare and hard to find. http://www.notinric.lechstepniewski.info/7nic-158_d.html
That's why I bought them every time I saw one. (if the price was reasonable). Here they come: all RIC VII nr 158. SMNS 3.03 gr , 19.63 mm 6 raws 6 upper stones SMN delta 2.39 gr , 19017 mm 8 raws 9 upper stones ( 2 different patina's ) SMNS 2.67 gr , 18.75 mm 6 raws 7 upper stones SMNS 2.66 gr , 18.18 mm 6 raws 7 upper stones
