heard a rumor that ebay will no longer allow the sale of "un-certified" coins in 2021, any truth to this, hmmm..any one??
If that were true then they can forget about their coin category. I bet about 90% of current listings are not worth slabbing. IMO the minimum value for a coin to be worth slabbing is $150-200. I just sent a coin in to PCGS and with S&H it cost me about $100.
Doubt that will happen.... that a large revenue to be cutting out... if they did what would the do on the bullion coins... I would think that the reward is more than the risk... IMO
Doubt that they will do that but they have probably considered it because I'm sure they get thousands of calls from people complaining about sellers. There are a lot of unscrupulous scumbags Hawking crappy coins and pulling the old bait-and-switch not to mention manipulating photographs to make coins appear nicer than they are.
It should also reduce DRAMATICALLY the number of belligerent folks posting worn die state modern production coins with photos reminiscent of Bigfoot sightings debating the values of their common circulated coinage . . . . . Z
There is possibly another factor that I don't know much about. Collectible coins and stamps are treated differently than other items for sale. For those of you who sell coins you probably noticed (or should have) that the default company that offers insurance for non-delivery on eBay does NOT insure coins and stamps. If you want insurance on those items you have to switch to the USPS option. I don't know what that's about but there it is.
What is the default shipping company that Ebay uses? USPS is pretty much the first and only option that comes up for me under Paypal's multi order shipping. While I don't sell or buy much on Ebay these days, I do use Paypal's multi order shipping feature quite regularly to get the discounted USPS rates. Z
Most rumors are started by TOTALLY uninformed individuals for what ever reason. Stop and THINK before you buy into any rumor, a little analysis of the rumor along with due diligence will usually dispel most rumors. Try and imagine what would happen to ebay if that happened. 90+% of their revenue from coin peddlers would be lost. Not to mention the loss that would be suffered by one of their most strident supporters - paypal. Think!
If I understand correctly, you can buy with PayPal but you won't be able to sell using PayPal only (which is the way I sell).
If the seller can't accept it how is the buyer supposed to pay with it? I believe the long term plan is to eventually only accept the eBay payments
I don't buy much through ebay, but when my wife's electric curlers broke down (they were bought in 1976), I searched ebay, and sure as shootin', I found one and it is still working. Women! I do buy a few coins, all of which are NGC or PCGS with PayPal. That's the best way to go.
When I ship coins I sell on EBay I use USPS. No problems and the postage label is discounted a bit and can be clearly read. I sold 4 pounds of sterling silver on Ebay last week and used UPS because the USPS site warned about delivery delays and I didn’t want it sitting around a post office warehouse.
Johny Crawford had a big hit with " Rumors" nearly 60 years ago. Not sure how this is relevant but I'm going stir crazy in Covid 19 lockdown in aged care in Ballarat in Australia.
If this rumor were true, it would be death to coin sales on eBay. The Peace Dollar is the target coin for this evaluation. There were 20,811 auctions/listings when I checked. 2041 were PCGS. 1710 NGC. 979 ANACS. That's a total of 4730 slabbed coins. That's 16,081 obsolete auctions/listings if this went through. It's not going to happen.
