    Your pictures didn't get any better by changing to a different forum.

    Anyway the pressure was high on the press that struck this coin.

    This was answered on another forum this way; That looks like an ex-encasement piece of some sort. It's not a mint-borne error. Something was done to crimp in the edges causing the metal to fan outward, which curled the rims inward making the coin appear to have higher relief. But it's not an error, it's damage.

    what would be the reasoning behind crimping and squeezing a 1988 nickel. is there some kind of rare 1988 nickel?

    The reason would be to encase the coin - it's quite common. There is even a special coin club for those who collect them.
