I bought a small batch of Tacitus coins and this one was amongst them. Despite being unlisted in RIC it is not really rare as is evidenced by 47 examples cited in MER RIC. It is in quote pleasing condition though and in quite good style. Tacitus Antoninianus Obv:– IMP C M CLA TACITVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– AEQVITAS AVG, Aequitas standing left with scales and cornucopia Minted in Siscia (//P) Emission 1 Officina 1. Reference(s) – Cohen 10. LV 1660 (14 examples 1998-2011). RIC 181 Bust type C var (RIC 181 is _|P). RIC temp #3605 (47 examples cited)
And bought at the same time was this common Lugdunum example. The emperor looks youthful despite being 75 or 76 years old at this stage. Obv:– IMP CL TACITVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– TEMPORVM FELICITAS, Felicitas standing left, holding caduceus and cornucopiae Minted in Lugdunum (Delta in left field | * in right field) Reference(s) – Cohen 144. Bastien 109 (55 examples cited). RIC 65 Bust Type C. RIC temp #3340 (66 examples cited)
Looking at the coin gave me a chuckle. 75yo! Both of your coins are great. Nice to find an unlisted! I only have one Tacitus, but I enjoy it. RI Tacitus 275-276 CE AE Ant Providentia
Very nice, @maridvnvm ! Tacitus is overlooked in pop culture. He's old and boring compared to the Caligulas and Commoduses that sell tickets to the cinema. Here's my favorite -- issued to commemorate victory over the Goths: Tacitus, AD 275-276. Roman billon antoninianus, 3.57 gm, 21.1 mm. Ticinum, AD 276. Obv: IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust, right. Rev: VICTORIA GOTTHI, Victoria standing left, holding wreath and palm; P in exergue. Refs: RIC 172; Cohen 158; Sear 11821; Hunter 59; CBN 1676.
...i wasnt too aware of him till i started concentrating of 3 cent. bunch..but now i find he and his coins are quite the celebs amongst those learned collectors..a rabbit hole emptys into a field..
Just in from a small batch of eBay tetradrachms, my first Tacitus tet. I haven't attributed it yet - going by TAKITOC. I like how the characteristic neck-beard is rendered with a couple of wavy lines:
Here's one that I like: Tacitus 275 - 276 Ӕ silvered Antoninianus, Rome, 275 21 x 23 mm - 4.07 g IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R/ LAETITIA FVND Laetitia standing left, holding wreath and anchor. XXIB in exergue. RIC Vi Rome 89b large, grey silvering patina, XF
