My grandfather gave me his collection a while ago (he's still alive), which contained some US and world coins. Anyway, he tried to save some silver coins, most of which he pulled out of circulation in the Mid to Late 60's (some maybe from the late 50's). Included were a few silver Roosevelts, a dateless SLQ, and some Washington Quarters. Most of these quarters are from the early 30's (and one stray from 1954). Here are three of the most worn down ones. I have a good feeling most of these circulated from the time they were minted, until my grandpa pulled them from circulation - especially the last one, it just take's the cake. I posted these because aside from these I haven't seen too many Washington quarters that were worn down so much. Post some if you have them #1 #2 #3 - the winner!
nice washingtons. i only have one that my mom gave to me after finding it in her change about 6 months ago.
Very nice Washingtons. For some reasons, the silver Washington Quarters are very appealing to me when they are heavily circulated. I don't know why I feel that way, I just think they wear very nicely.
Magman... Very nice coins and very nice photos of them... Careful where you walk here though....I am almost as old as some of those coins (circa 1943)... .....I say some of this 'tongue-in-cheek' but slightly on the serious side too. Most of these quarters were around before there were such things as 'coin operated' machines, Illinois (and other) tollways, or even coin-operated laundromats, yet, they were handled more than the coins of today, IMO. The metals were not as hardened as they are today, yet, they stayed in circulation longer than today's coins. Yes, those coins were probably in circulation from their mintage until your grandfather pulled them from circulation to put them into his collection. Yes, he valued them in their worn condition because they were part of his life at that time. He apparently feels that you are now old enough to be entrusted with coinage that can never be replaced, which took him years and a sharp eye to collect. The only way you will find those in change today is if somebody breaks up a collection (honestly or otherwise). I only hope that they will be prized part of your collection and something you can pass on to your grandchild someday. As for some of my early Washington quarters, I will post some in a week or so after Santa delivers my macro lens. They too (like their owner) are quite worn. BTW, I was just looking (this morning) at a set of uncirculated coins from 1954 (all three mints) that my grandfather gave me for Christmas - 1954 along with several years of uncirculated Lincoln heads - the start of my coin collecting.
Yup, the coins he gave me are some of my favorite, even though they hold no value except their silver content. This time I was careful, and I don't think I said the coins were "old" (I know I've done it before though, lol) I'd like to see the one's you have. And yeah, he is the one who got me interested in coins. I saw these when I was a kid and thought "wow, 1934, that's really old!" lol He even had a Liberty Nickel from 1910, which was amazing to me. Here's the Dateless SLQ
Magman, here is one of mine. Similar story to yours. This coin, and several other silvers, were taken out of circulation by my father and given to me for my collection. They are very meaningful to me and some of my favorite coins are those collected from circulation from years ago with a lot of wear. John
I love old worn out coins.... and I'm always happy to see someone older than me (thanks Al... circa 1944 here)!
Numan, that 1934 looks very similar! And yeah, I also like worn out coins. Especially when you know where they came from
yeah. unfortunately the stars on the reverse destroy that theory, but if you ask them to throw it in the dryer a few rounds, maybe there will be enough wear to mask the stars...and WALA!! 1916 slq! or maybe not.
Interesting Morgan, how exactly does one side become so much more worn than the other? Also not a Washington, but this poor Lincoln cent is certainly worn down.
