To me it looks like loose metal on the rim, but I am not sure.

My question is - I thought PVC ate into the coin? I did not think it raised the surface like that.

I don't think so but it sure looks like it. I believe it's actually a tiny cud and was noted as such in the Bowers auction back in 1996. The ANACS holder it's in now makes it really hard to get a good look at it. They called it cleaned Net AU-55. There are very few of these known in MS. If not for my poor care I feel it would probably have graded a low MS. A costly mistake.

I was wondering the same thing and not knowing much about this series was wondering if this was one of the things Larry was asking about in the original post. Thanks for the clarification - Hard lesson on the PVC :( but a great thread!

I think Doug pretty much summs it up , rusted die , 9 in date reworked , and solder for jewelry .

The rusted die part is correct.

So the date wasn't reworked , is that little mark on the top of the nine normal for that year ?

No it is not. It is most likely due to post mint damage - otherwise I think ANACS would have said something.

As for the metal on the edge, never seen or heard of a cud on the edge, but suppose it could be possible. Again, ANACS apparently did not mention it.

It does have that look. If the little bumps were in the fields too I would think so as well.

The rusty die is not actually a problem but at the same time it is. Many don't like the look and would probably never buy such a coin. It is a bit fugly in images that large.

It's interesting to here all the opinions. Thanks for all the post.

Your all confusing me. :) The rusted die caused the raised spots on the lady liberty, but where is the PVC damage? I see a little place about 4 o'clock in the field, but that is it.

Look above the head at the dark areas and follow that to the right thru the stars. Also look at the dark areas to the right of the foot. The PVC is gone but the damage to the surface is still there. The coin also turned much darker because of the PVC. Wish I could have posted a better image but dark coins are tough for me.

Okay - I see it now. When you first mentioned PVC I thought you were talking about the bumps on seated Liberty - is was confused. Now all is better. :)
