    Hey everyone! :D

I just got my first ever American gold coin today, and am very proud of it.

I haven't taken pictures of gold coins before, so please ignore the color, and also some details on the coin are not showing on the pictures, so please give a grade at the lowest, not highest, thanks!

P.S. And no, the coin has not been polished :D

I agree that it is an AU-55! Congrats on your first Gold Coin and a nice one at that!

AU 53. Also I see some strong doubling on the reverse. Am I correct? Great coin either way. And for a rare change I see no reason to question it's authenticity.

I think I will agree with AU too. I will try to get better pictures tomorrow, and hopefully I will be able to get all of the details into the pictures :D

Nice pickup Ryan. One day I've got to get one of these. Everyone's sayin' AU...I'm going to say MS62, odd one that I am.....

I don't see anything that jumps out to me as wear, but I'm not good at grading these coins. So, I'll just say it's a nice coin and leave it at that. :thumb:

I agree it is AU - i see discoloration on the check and some wear on the fields making it an AU 55

The only placed where I am seeing wear is the cheek, as mentioned, and on the top of the left eagles wing.

I am very fortunate I got this for such a low price of $250 :D That's basically melt!

Is the first place these coins wear on the cheek? That surprises me because I would think that's the lowest point of the design and therefore more protected. I would expect wear on the fields and the very edge of the design.

I did see that lighter color area on the cheek but I don't know this design well. I thought it was an artifact of light hitting a part of the design and reflecting.

Actually Richie the ANA 6th Edition says Libertys' cheekbone , headress band with the zig zag lines , front part of the feathers and the shoulder of the eagles wing are the 1st places to wear .

My Indian has the full and complete zag zag lines on the headband, but it didn't come through on the pictures.

These are just the highest points , you can have wear that just started like on the cheeks and wing but none on the band , yours is to me a very beautiful high grade AU-58 IF THEY GAVE 59s I'd give it that , It looks nicer than most MS-60-61s .

a $5 gold eagle from 1910 is the only gold coin I own.

It is a beautiful thing...reminds me why i collect coins.

My next most wanted piece is a texas half dollar....also stunning.

I see you have one in your avatar ryanbrooks.

Oh, OK. I don't have the ANA guide, I have just taken notes from one I borrowed a while back from a friend about a couple of the series's I collect. So, I didn't have that information. But, I think I'm getting the ANA book for Christmas. :D

This is what I don't understand. With these coins, the design is stamped into the coin, the details don't rise above the fields. I would think the field would be the highest point on the coin.

Ahhhh - but only parts of the design are low, some parts of the design are high. Think about it - if the entire design was pushed down into the coin, there wouldn't be anything left in the middle because the obv and rev would remove it all. You have to have highs and lows to show the design at all.

High points on the obv are headdress just nehind the ear, headdress band just above the eyebrow and the jawline just below the corner of the mouth. On the rev it is the top of the wing closest to the back of the neck.
