I being stupid forgot to order the proof set and did not think it would be sold out, well today I check to order it and what do you know, sold out. I probably should have waited till after the holidays, but I just placed an e-bay order for 50 bucks for the clad one. I did not want to risk it.

I hope this was not a big mistake. I ordered the silver one today as well.

No, Im getting both haha. I ordered the silver one from the mint 10 minutes ago and just bought the clad one off of ebay. I would have really hated to miss this since I started almost 10 years ago.

Funny thing is that it's usually the silver that sells out first. Wonder what happened?

I posted in another thread that littleton has them (2008 clad proof sets) for $40 plus shipping.

I doubt that you will regret it in 6 months.

I have three 2008 clad proof sets and three 2008 silver proof sets. Perhaps it will make up for the presidential first day of issue sets that I have for all eight presidents (times 3). I think I'm only going to make out on Washington on that one. I listened too much to HSN and thought the rim thing might add value to these first day of issues. I'm probably wrong again. Anyway, we'll see.

That is why I use subscriptions with my mint account. :) They haven't missed anything yet.

The Mint subscriptions are the way to go if you know you're going to want X # of sets sometime during the year. I start with one or two and buy more later if I want to. I only have the extra $5 shipping to deal with.

I just received by clad proof set from an outside vendor. Coins are fine, but the blue box is a little battered. My annoyance aside, should I raise a stink on this and demand they replace it with a like new proof set, or is this not a big deal?

If you are happy with the coins, then be happy with the package. You are not collecting the packaging. If you return it, you could get a pristine package with bad coins inside. Yes, in a perfect world it would be optimal to have both great packaging AND great coins, but when it really comes down to it... you're a coin colector, right?

You can always buy a new box on ebay for a couple of bucks. I always keep the old one but keep the coins in the new one.

The 2008 clad proof set is now $82.95 at Littleton, they more than doubled the price.
