CHICKENS? CHICKENS? Well let’s see if this is acceptable or not.

While metal detecting I found this brothel token that features a “chicken” as a reference. (Hey, I didn’t start this!!)

Another GB, this time an island within an island. Edward the Confessor Pointed Helmet penny of Langport in Somerset. Situated on the Somerset Levels, in Saxon times Langport would be an island for nearly half the year as the whole area flooded every winter (and still does occasionally). Langport rises to a heady 10m above sea level.

What an interesting and most attractive coin, @robp - marvellous preservation, too. I was in Crewkerne last year, ten miles south of Langport, and also a now tiny town where pennies were coined in Saxon times. But the only now known piece is in a Scandinavian collection (according to information in the Crewkerne town museum).

And here's a nice medieval island coin I bought only last week:

    4826 ct.jpg

Sicily, Norman dynasty. AE trifollaro, William II of Sicily 1166-1189. Obv. Head of lion facing slightly left. Rev. Date palm tree. 24 mm, 10.42 gr.

Someone in the museum is making it up as they go along because that's complete nonsense. The number of coins of all types is about 30, most in museums with 5 believed to be in private hands. The museum might not have one as they don't come cheap, but they are available to acquire if they could find sufficient funds.

This is my Crewkerne example. Cnut quatrefoil type reading PINAS ON CRVC. Winas was a long term resident of Cadbury/Ilchester/Crewkerne mints, being at one or the other for 20-30 years.

@robp - thanks very much for the information and even more for that most beautiful coin. I can't hope to own a piece like that ever. And to keep this thread-related, another coin of Sicily, only a century earlier but very different:

    6663 FA av 300.jpg

AV 1/4 dinar Fatimids about 1060. Al-Mustansir 1036-1094. Siqillyah (=Sicily). Stellate type. 15 mm, 0.77 gr. Obverse: the centre field consists of the kalima, and the marginal inscription (only part of it visible) consists of verse 33 from Chapter 9 of the Quran. Reverse: in the centre field are the name and title of caliph Al-Mustansir, and the marginal inscription provides the mint name and date (date invisible). Album 722.
