Hello all, Another neat CoinWeek article. 1970-S Proof Washington Quarter Struck on Silver Barber Quarter (Not my coin) https://coinweek.com/coins/error-co...gton-quarter-struck-on-silver-barber-quarter/ Enjoy!
Makes you wonder what else is out their. If somebody has a coin struck on a railroad spike I may be a player.
This "error" is certainly going to spawn plenty of "getting rich of off pocket-change" videos on Youtube. It makes me wonder how long it'll be before someone posts an incredibly vague and poorly photographed thread claiming they found one in circulation?
What were the mint workers doing in San Francisco in 1970? They have specially prepared proof planchets and yet a Canadian quarter and a Barber quarter "accidentally" find their way into 2 proof quarters? This is total crap. And I appreciate Paddy taking the time to bring this to my attention, as I never heard of it before and it is significant in regards to the hobby. (The Barber).
And this has me wondering what the legal implications might be in owning such a mint contrived item. Being so blatant you would think that the TPG would have to report such an item. It is clearly an illegal coin.
For those who didn’t read the whole article: “A very small group of Proof errors recently came from a collection that was auctioned by the State of California. The U.S. Secret Service inspected and released this collection to the State of California determining that it was legal to own. The State of California then auctioned the collection and it has been dispersed since the sale.” (Cited from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1970-s-proof-washington-25c-struck-on-silver-barber-25c.365997/)
Mike is that really you? Kool! 2nd post since 2003? Strange. Thanks for responding. I recently purchased your book
Hi paddyman98 Yes its me, Mike Byers The proof Washington Quarters struck on the Canadian and Barber Quarters came from the deal that the U.S. Secret Service inspected and released to the State of CA which were subsequently auctioned off. They are well known in the Numismatic Community and have been around for a long time.
Paddyman98 I hope you enjoy my book. It won the NLG award for the best world book. I also publish Mint Error News.
