Howdy folks, Which US coin in your collection boasts the title of 'lowest mintage?' I believe in my collection, one of my most recent acquisitions, a 1905 proof Liberty head nickel holds the title with a mintage of only 2,152. From there, I think it's quite a jump up to my #2 contender: a 1938-D Oregon commemorative, with only 6,006 struck. How about you??
Would've been the 1878 proof Trade dollar (900), but I sold it. Now, I guess it's the Jane Pierce uncirculated First Spouse gold. Mintage 3000-something, but there are far fewer than 3000 collectors who care, so it makes no difference.
3,575 for this one. (*Im including only post-colonial US, non-exonumia, from my present, not past collection.)
Regular mintage my 1882 Seated Half Dollar with 4,400 made: 'Special' historic issue, my 1839 proof dime. Unknown mintage, 6 known examples:
1913 Proof 1c -- 2,983 If you aren't considering proof vs. business strike, then it's a 1938-D Arkansas 50c -- 3,155
I suppose this is the "lowest mintage"; since SCWC doesn't list any mintage. Never took a photo so I had to borrow from the catalog. Sorry Here's a link to a bit of history: http://www.prisonhistory.net/famous-prisons/devils-island/
I'll bet the Morgan guys either will be too embarrassed to post, or will post some off-the-wall VAMs, seeing as the lowest mintage for a regular strike is 100,000. And IMO, the craziest thing is the rarity and price is hyped so much on them.
