ATTN: U.S. Mint - Ideas For After the ATB Quarter Series - What Comes Next?

Does anyone know what the plan is for what will be next after the ATB Quarter Series is done? The State Quarters were hugely successful, as were the ATB Quarters. I know of 7 kids that got interested in coin collecting in the past YEAR alone due to these series!

If anyone at the Mint is reading this, it would be good to do another series that captures the INTEREST of kids and adults alike. That means INTERESTING PICTURES. In other words - no presidents, vice presidents, wives, mistresses or other "Heads". "Heads" do not capture interest, least of all kids' interest. The future of coin collecting is with kids who will turn into adults who then spend a lot of money on the nostalgia of their youth interests.

Here's an idea - do State Mammals. It would be interesting.

Give States the option to substitute the State Mammal on their coin with a Bird, Fish or other Creature ONLY if another state's coin will be minted earlier with the same or similar mammal (like another breed of horse).

The Mint should pick the order of which states go first, second, third, etc., by way of a Random Drawing and make it a BIG EVENT. Maybe even issue the first Quarter of the series to mark the occasion.

In addition, involve KIDS in the Random Drawing Event by having KIDS pick the states in The Big Random Drawing Event. Have one kid from every state do a draw.

Each State can do a random drawing of all the kids in their state who want to participate, or pick a kid in some other way. It's up to each State to decide how to pick a kid to send to the big U.S. Mint Drawing to determine which State goes first, second, third, etc.

Events like this make it into the News, which generates interest.

This kind of thing gets kids and parents and grandparents interested. Interest generates all those people spending money, which generates profits for the Mint.

(PS - The U.S. Mint should feel free to give a "Hat Tip" for any ideas above that they use. ;) )

No new legislation has appeared to start any new programs. From what I have read the reverse design mandated to appear after the America the Beautiful program ends is to reflect Gen. Washington crossing the Delaware River prior to the Battle of Trenton during the American Revolution. No one seems to know if the mint will just use the reverse design from the New Jersey State quarter or use a new design.

How about great musicians? I mean GREAT, outstanding, not the pop crap.

I can’t argue against any of your ideas. Although a collector my age probably wouldn’t give a toot, an affordable and doable series for kids is a good idea.

How about no more useless ballast and make coins purely for circulation? I'm tired of trying to collect 25 or 30 different quarters every year.

I think I agree. But what example of 25-30 quarters in one year?!

I like to collect coins meant for circulation. All the excess stuff seems like a money grab to me.

How about famous left-handed baseball pitchers from the state...naw, I think the Franklin Mint already did that (sarcasm)

5 different quarters, 3 different mints (4 if they do West Point), Proofs and all the special stuff they do with them. It is easy to have 25 different quarters in one year.

There's no consensus on who is "great".

More importantly, it's just a picture of a person on a small coin. One will look similar to the other and will not look different enough from the other to generate interest. Like the presidents, it would not be interesting to a wide range of people. The idea is to generate interest.

It would be interesting if there were even a slim chance to find all the coins in circulation. With kids it is how many can your daddy afford to buy for you?

All the stuff they make for collectors are what makes money for the Mint. You don't have to collect 25 to 30 different quarters every year. You can limit your collection to only silver or only one mint.

They're never going to stop making all the different varieties of a single design until people stop buying enough of them to generate a profit. They keep making them BECAUSE you keep buying them. You and hundreds of thousands like you have to stop buying them first and only then will they stop making them. And since thousands of people won't stop buying them, even if you do stop, chances are they will keep making them because they turn a nice profit for the mint!

Are you talking about the President series?

It IS a money grab! It's what keeps the Mint self-supporting without needing extra money from the Treasury to keep it going.

How is that different than presidents? No consensus, person on small coin, etc.
    Lincoln cent for instance.

I limit myself mostly to coins meant for circulation. They put out proof sets, but I don't buy them.

I would love to see a state animals series. I enjoy having a varied supply of coins to look for. Keeps me busy and interested.
