WAY up state. Elmira, not far i think from where Zaneman comes from on the PA side of the border. They are paying me good money to do 7 Nights on and 7 nights off...better than I can get anywhere in the city.

You can buy a house there for about $650 a month on a 15 year mortgage. Makes me think how much money I could save if the kids weren't in Yeshiva and I wasn't feeding them a steady diet of Music, Art, Theater and Culture..

Elmira sure is up there alright!

Yeah you seriously need to get a car. I'm in the business (I dont and cant sell retail, besides I deal in screwball stuff) so let me know if you need advice or a hookup.

The upsides are plenty, but so are the downsides. Don't think there's a Solomon Schechter there let alone a Yeshiva.

Drixoral if you can still get it and if you don't have any heart desease. It might be behind the RX counter because of the Psuedoephdrine.

Thanks for posting the coin Ruben. I spent an hour on northeastcoins's website. They have some nice coins! Are they reputable? Have you purchased from them before?

They are extremely reputable and have an impeccable reputation. And yes, I have purchased from them many times. Their prices tend to be high, but their coins tend to be exceptional too.

I'm late coming into this thread so I'm probably echoing what others have said, but don't feel too bad about this one, its true worth is probably closer to $550-700. It's definitely not a MS66, closer to MS63 or 64, at best.

What I see on the reverse - a scrape on the 3rd, 4th and 5th feathers of the eagle's right wing; a scrape on the 1st feather of the left wing; a dent in the field between the two wings; apparent multiple hits on the front of the base of the left wing; beat up O on OF; beat up D in UNITED; hits on the CA of AMERICA; gouge on the O of DOLLAR; starting of toning evident.

What I see on the obverse - hit on the Y and in the field between the TY of LIBERTY; hit on Liberty's leg just above her right ankle; scrape on Liberty's right wrist; scrape in the field between the ER of LIBERTY; several scrapes on the left wall to Liberty's right; one damaged rivet at 9:00 on the shield.

Aside from all that, it is a nice looking example. However, the pebbled appearance of the background fields doesn't look quite right, but at least she has a full head and all of her toes.

    David,

You can't seriously think this coin is an MS63/4. While I agree with every thing you see and pointed out, they are all minor abrasions and none are in the focal areas of the coin. In addition, this coin has a hammered strike and booming luster. I wish my 1917 T1 SLQ looked half this good and mine is an MS65. If you had said PQ MS65, maybe, but an MS63/64. David, there are 4 hits that bug me. Two are on the Obverse; the one on her exposed shin and one to the right of "E" in "LIBERTY" and on the Reverse both "O"s have hits. Iverall though, I agree with Paul, this is a beauty.

On the other hand, while MS66 is the limit and I don't see this crossing to a 67, this is a stunning coin, awesome luster, maybe not the blast white that I like but this coin from the pictures really looks stunning. But what really does it for me and surely seals the grade is the strike, that's a really well struck coin. People tend to take the 1917-P for granted, it's a coin that basically comes in FH as a rule rather than the exception to the point that it's kept the 17-D and 17-S FHs artificially low.

But this is what I would call an "Ultimate Full Head" and it is a stunning coin. I have an MS65FH that's nice and has the green sticker and is, IMO, nowhere near as nice as this coin. I'm seriously considering buying it.

    1) that's the most gorgeous SLQ I've ever seen.

    2) I would grade it MS 34046040201245 if I was allowed to even hold it

    3) GD's red is scary. O_O

So I point out fifteen (15) minor defects and you think they should be ignored in assigning a grade because it looks nice? I agree it is a very nice looking example but how many defects would it have to have before you would drop it a point or two?

The "Official" ANA Grading Standards are:
MS-66 - Must have above average quality of strike and full original mint luster, with no more than two or three minor but noticeable contact marks. A few very light hairlines may show under magnification, or there may be one or two light scuff marks showing on frosted surfaces or in the field. The eye appeal must be above average and very pleasing for the date and mint. Copper coins display full original or lightly toned color as appropriate.

MS-65 - Shows an attractive high quality of luster and strike for the date and mint. A few small scattered contact marks, or two larger marks may be present, and one or two small patches of hairlines may show under magnification. Noticeable light scuff marks may show on the high points of the design. Overall quality is above average and overall eye appeal is very pleasing. Copper coins have full luster with original or darkened color as appropriate.

MS-64 - Has at least average luster and strike for the type. Several small contact marks in groups, as well as one or two moderately heavy marks may be present. One or two mall patches of hairlines may show under low magnification. Noticeable light scuff marks or defects might be seen within the design or in the field. Attractive overall quality with a pleasing eye appeal. Copper coins may be slightly dull. Color should be appropriate.

MS-63 - Mint luster may be slightly impaired. Numerous small contact marks, and a few scattered heavy marks may be seen. Small hairlines are visible without magnification. Several detracting scuff marks or defects may be present throughout the design or in the fields. The general quality is about average, but overall the coin is rather attractive. Copper pieces may be darkened or dull. Color should be appropriate.

Objectively, after reading the above, where would you place the subject coin? Remember, you're grading the technical aspects of the piece, without emotional input.
