Got 10 rolls of Lincolns from bank. Most had at least some coins like this - 3 worst rolls were 2/3 full of these. Some of this can be washed off but leaves underlying corrosion. Did find three missing dates without the deposits, two very recent and a 1970, and a couple (without deposits) in better shape than what I had. Some with deposits would have qualified as replacements. Even found a 1919, but it took a magnifier to determine that and mine was better. Also found 3 Canadians, a 2-cent Euro from Spain (can you find it?) and a badly corroded Roosevelt, so despite the disappointment I guess I came out ahead, both collection-wise and financially!

As long as you don't end up needing medical attention for acute zinc poisoning. ;)

I never clean coins and I don't suggest it to anyone. But in this case, clean those coins and wash and disinfect your hands.

Meh, not much could survive on that stuff for long. On the other hand, I'm guessing there was a good bit of general filth as well...

These look exactly like the coins I dug up and tumbled w/ vinegar, water & sand before rolling. (But only when they were not washed properly)
And yes, I always checked for rarity/collectibility before tumbling.

I've found worse in your typical Coinstar machine.

Makes you miss those pre-1982 copper cents, doesn't it?

Of course. A CoinStar knows what's food and what isn't, and will barf these back out, pronto.

It looks like they were taken out of a wishing well or fountain.

If only the U.S. Mint adopted an aluminum composition for the Lincoln Cent instead of zinc.

Those are some ugly coins. :vomit: But it sounds like you came out ahead despite them.

Yeah, they'd still be bad, but not evil.
