Thoughts on this puppy? Is the price a bit high?
What are all the "cut" marks on the eagles wings?
Looking at this from ebay for my type set collection. It's a bit pricey at $190 but has good eye appeal, except for these "cut" marks. MS66 though, even with these detractors?

I think I'd pass and find another coin. I think it's also graded a bit high.

Can you elaborate on why you would pass? Thanks.

Sure, it's graded MS-66 by IGC but it's more like a MS-64. I think it's over graded and overpriced. It has a gold toning to it and for a silver dollar that looks odd, especially if I put it in my type set, itcwoukd look out of place. There are those small cuts on the Eagles wings. To me that looks like Damage. There are a few black spots on the reverse that I find slightly distracting. Lastly, just above the last S in STATES on the denticles, is a white spot. That is very annoying to me. It really stands out. As soon as I see the reverse my eyes go straight to that white spot. It really stands out.

Then I look at the mintage, almost 13,000,000 were minted. It's a common date and for the price they are asking, it's at or slightly above my Red Book. For me, it all boils down to the coin is not up to the grade it was given and if submitted to PCGS, NGC or ANACS, I doubt it would be given the MS-66 grade. That and all those little things add up to just not worth the price.

Well that's my opinion and my reasoning behind that opinion. I feel I could do much better. For less money I could get a much better looking common date Morgan Silver Dollar for my type set.

Hope this helps you make the decision that's right for you and for your collection. Best wishes. Let us know what you decide.

I think there’s better for the money and a bit overgraded

If that was really ms 66 I would tell you to snatch it up. I don’t believe it is. Always hard to grade when not in hand by I think 64 is more likely. I would pass.

Thanks. I can only comment on what I see. Sometimes I miss something. Other times I see what others missed. That's all natural but I do state what I see and sometimes the person asking for my opinion doesn't like what I say. You've been around long enough to know what I mean. I'm honest in my opinions and like most of us, it's based in part on adding that coin to my collection.

I believe you can easily find a slabbed 65 of this date with more pizzazz than I'm seeing here.

I dont think you’ll be happy with the off-gold toning.

You can find dozens and dozens of PCGS and NGC 80s and 81s graded 65 that are super close to PL and jaw dropping in the $125ish area.
